Chinese New Year in BKK & fireworks?

Re: Chinese New Year in Bangkok & Fireworks?
What is the exact date of Chinese New Year in Bangkok in 2006? Our calendar in USA lists Saturday, January 29, 2006 as Chinese New Year.

Trying to decide if worthwhile to book a hotel on the river in Bangkok if Chinese New Year is on Sat. 1/29/06.
And if so, what time do they have the fireworks. Thank you.

Chinese New Year is celebrated over three days. In 2006, the first day is Saturday the 29 of January. I believe the fireworks here in Hong Kong are scheduled for Monday 30 January. Fireworks are usually held on the second or third day. As noted above, as the Chinese community is small in Thailand, so there aren't usually fireworks along the river. However, you may find smaller celebrations in the Chinatown area, which centers around Charoen Krung Road. There are unlikely to be large scale fireworks, but would be lion dancers and small street firecrackers plus street fairs and food.

IMO it is always worth staying on the river in Bangkok as the river is such a big part of life in that city and in the country. It is esp lovely at sunrise with all the activity, and late at night when the rice barges flow silently by. IMO you really miss part of the experience of Thailand and Bangkok by not staying on the river, not to mention the convenience of hopping on the waterbuses and hotel boats to get around.

Chinese New Year is Sun 1/29/2006.

Fireworks in Hong Kong is always on the 2nd night of the new year, so that's 1/30/2006 Monday.
