I have been studying and reading everyone's China trip reports and would appreciate some feedback on our proposed itinerary. Our time span is constrained by my adult daughter who must be in Shanghai May 10-15 as she is presenting her research at a conference. My husband and I are meeting up with her so she has someone to travel with, we are always willing to undertake an adventure.
I realize travel in China can present challenges, but we have traveled independently numerous times including the middle east, Vietnam and Cambodia so we are aware of some of the problems that arise. That being said here goes:
Beijing April 29-May 3 then take the overnight train to Pingyao
Pingyao May 4-5 and take the overnight train to Xian
Xian May 6-7 and then take the train to Yuoyang
Yuoyang May 8-10 and then fly to Shanghai
Is this a reasonable undertaking? Are the trains reliable? I would appreciate any feedback you have to offer, thanks in advance.

> I realize travel in China can present challenges, but we have traveled independently numerous times
And you should be able to travel independently in China, too!
> Beijing April 29-May 3
That means you will be in Beijing on May 1, a major holiday. I'm not sure how that will affect you, but it is something you might want to keep in mind. I think there was a post about it on this board in the past year or so - you might want to search for it.
> Pingyao May 4-5
It depends on what you want to see and do, but one day may be sufficient for Pingyao. You might want to add the extra day to Xi'an or Beijing.
Hope that helps!
