We are thinking about Chiang Mai for June 9-12,2011. Can anyone give us an idea of things to do and see? We don't know if that's too much time in the area?? We're also wondering if the weather is good then...any ideas will be much appreciated!!

Hi,

Although this is Thailand forum, I don't think that you can get many information about Chiang Mai in this forum. Many of regulars in this forum are not fond of Chiang Mai, and may suggest you to skip Chiang Mai and go to other places.

Where are you coming from? Where else are you visiting on this trip? What are your interests? Have you traveled elsewhere in this area? Without a lot more information, it's difficult to make recommendations for you.

You leave a lot out of your post. Like, are you flying all the way to Thailand just to see Chiang Mai for 3 or 4 days and that is it?? Or, are you trying to fit Chiang Mai in to your Thailand trip that already has Bangkok and maybe some beach area already on the schedule?

Chiang Mai is worth a visit if it is part of a longer holiday than just 4 days. Unless you are flying in from nearby Laos or Cambodia, etc. To fly a long way from Europe or elsewhere just for 4 days is not worth the money paid for the plane ticket. My opinion, to fly all the way to Thailand and NOT visit Bangkok is also a waste of money. Many people do see several places in Thailand when on a holiday.

My recommendation is to start your holiday in Bangkok for a few days and end it there for a final night or two. While in Bangkok you can purchase tickets for flights to Chiang Mai if you want plus see the city and do some tours. In Thailand (also Chiang Mai, Pattaya and Phuket) you can get reasonably priced tours through local travel agencies. There are lots of travel agencies available used to quick turnarounds for tours. If you are only flying in for 4 days, a few more days in Thailand is not that much more money. Hotels with air start under 1000 baht per night, especially in June.

June is the start of the rainy season. Which doesn't mean you will have rain 24 hours a day every day. You normally have rainfall for a few hours and then the sun comes back out. Tourists still visit the Chiang Mai area during June, hotels are cheaper too during this time! I like the rainy season because all of the trees, plants, grasses are more colorful.

Oh yeah, Chiang Mai is always popular with tourists visiting Thailand. Some particular tourists may not care for it but it is very popular, especially with women. In the Chiang Mai area you get a chance to see some of the beauty and culture that makes Thailand unique. Some tourists (especially if they are quite young) think only visiting beach areas is the way to go and waste their entire time only at beach areas. My advice is to see a little of everything including Northern Thailand and beach areas if you want. Don't skip Bangkok!

Thanks and sorry about the scant info. Yes, we are visiting there as part of a larger trip...sounds like we'll do fine with that amount of time.

We spent 5 days in NOrthern Thailand-Chiang Mai & Chiang Rai-Golden Triangle. I loved that part of Thailand. OUr guide Sgt. Kai was wonderful. Glad we saw it.

Chiang Mai is a waste of time. Only go there after exhausting every other popular city, save for Pattaya.
