Cheap Air Tix to Indonesia

I'm looking to fly to Indonesia (ideally Bali) June 29 - July 14 from Washington, DC. The flights are running $2500 ++ which is surprising - considering I flew there 2 years ago for much less. Anyone know of flights to take that will run me closer to the $1000 -$1500 range? I'm not opposed to flying into Singpore,Jakarata or other neighboring city to explore and just catch a regional flight to DPS. I'm taking my boyfriend for the first time to Asia and want him to have a great time, but at the same time don't want to blow the majority of our travel budget on the air component.

Thanks all! Namaste,
Mary

From NYC you have Singapore Airlines non stop to Singapore and then continue with them to Bali. Malaysia Sirlines also to Kuala Lumpur and onewards to Bali ( that flight routes I believe via Stockholm on the way to Kuala Lumpur ), Thai non stop to Bangkok and then onwards to Bali.
You need to check suitable connections on those.
Thgose allow you to stick with one airline all the way.
Then look at the westbound routes on Asian carriers.
Sounds like you need a good old fashioned local DC travel agent who deals with Asia to source the flights and fares, someone may be able to suggest one in the DC area.

Your best bet is probably through Singapore, which is served by a lot of carriers. Then you can use Jet Star to get from Singapore to Bali quite cheaply.

Our quote is about $1100 with tax using Singapore Airline (which I am very partial to).Your route will be JFK-Frankfurt (you can stop here for $75 more), Singapore, Denpasar. Tell her the Wilders sent you I just booked my flight today. Whoohoo!!!

Thanks so much everyone, this is so great. Anyone spend anytime in Borneo? Looking to see how much it costs to fly/stay in Borneo (visit Orangutan parks) for a few days?

Thanks!

I forgot to mention the quote is for low season to Jakarta. High is $150 more or so. For Singapore Air, these guys have some good deals. I've seen lower prices, not by much, on other flights but I just love SQ because of the service and the low accident rate. Also, there's almost an hourly flight from Singapore to Indonesia.

No info on Borneo.
