We stayed at the River View Lodge just a few weeks ago, it is right on the river. We paid a little over $40 per night for a large room with balcony. The hotel has a pool and a nice breakfast is included. We liked it because it wasn't a sterile Western style hotel. The staff was very nice and helpful. We booked a day trip to Lampang through the hotel, they had an in-house guide and driver. It was just my husband and I and the two of them. It was nice, we went to the Elephant Training Camp at Lampang, to 2 local markets, and to 2 temples (Wat Phra That and another). We spent most of our evenings at the Night Bazaar shopping. If you go to Bangkok, go to the Weekend Market as prices were better there.

Things to do in Chiangmai - shop til you drop at night market. If you want to try clothes on, suggest you wear a swimsuit under clothing. Massage at "First Foot and Body massage". Bathe elephants at Maetaeng Elephant park. Shop in daytime at Tawai Brasah for wood items, particularly elephants. Wholesale - no bargaining, but excellent prices. Attend Thai cooking school. The possibilities are endless.

The Night bazarr is fabulous. Go everynight and stay till late. Also we hired a scooter and discovered all the side streets, wouldn't do this in Bankok but CM is a lot quieter.
We stayed at the Westin which was nice but a bit far out of town.
Also we hired a taxi and driver for the day (approx 75 USD) and he took us to some great places including elephants, snake shows, hill tribe villiage, temples. It was well worth the money as he took us to out of the way and less touristed places than we would normally have seen.

If you need to look up a hotel in Thailand go to www.r24.org and you can find a listing of 575 hotels and resorts for most of thailand, click on the headings and your country's currency and it will list all hotels in that location with rates or you can click on the individual hotel to get pictures, services etc.
