What's your budget?

Right now my favourite is the "137 Pillars House" but that's a bit expensive.

If you want a good hotel right in the Night Bazaar area then there is the Dusit D2, the Le Meridien and the Shangri-la. However all of them are modern style with no Thai architecture but luxurious and comfortable.

If you want to splurge then there's the Chedi which is near the Night Bazaar area.

If money is not an issue and the location can be around the city then I really like the Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi equally along with the 137 Pillars House.

If you want to be in the old city then, as Smeagol have mentioned, the Tamarind Village is a good choice along with the Rachamanka (same owners as the Tamarind).

I last used this hotel when it was still called the Montri Hotel. Across from Thapae Gate. Walk to night market. Used to be a flea market of sorts near the Thapae Plaza with some items cheaper than the night market vendors. Some nightlife, walk to Seven Eleven type stores, walk to internet shops, restaurants and if still there even massage and cooking schools. Local travel agencies can set you up with tours on short notice.

Good luck.

Green Palace for me at BT450 per night during normal season, with blasting A/C. Cannot advise on December. This location a bit far to walk to Old City but near plenty of bars and western 'stuff'.

I also liked the De Naga. Small, clean and walking distance to many of the sites of the area.

We stayed at http://www.3sisbedandbreakfast.com/ in Dec 2011. Great location in the Old Town close to the Thae Pae Gate and lots of good restaurants, walking markets ( much better than the NB) personally I did not like the area around the Night Bazaar which I found a bit tacky.
