CATHAY PACIFIC BUSINESS CLASS LAX- HKG - SYD
Hello all! I will be travelling with my boyfriend from Los Angelos to Sydney via Hong King for a day layover. Only to return the same route 2 weeks later (Hellish, I know!) Fortunately, we have tickets in business class. Any recommendations out there on preferred seating 747 on three legs of the journey and Airbus 330 on one? What can we expect on Cathay? Thanks in advance for your time and response!!

You are in for a treat. I was on Cathay Pacific two years ago and thought it was wonderful especially the attentive service and the wonderfully served meals. We sat downstairs on the 747 but most people say upstairs is quieter. On the Airbus any aisle-window combo is probably good as long as you are not too close to the galley or washrooms. Be sure ot have the freshly made cappacino.

Jenny - My husband and I flew Cathay business class LA to Hong Kong and on to Bangkok in August of 2002. The service and food were excellent; the seats were good, but not great. We were not on a plane (either coming or going) that had the new sleeper seats in business class. In fact, from what I have read, very few of the Cathay planes have made the conversion, so don't plan on having the new seats. You can try to select your seats in advance, but it is no guarantee. I went on the Cathay web site weeks in advance, selected our seats, got confirmation of those seat assignments but when we got to LAX, we were given new seats despite my showing them the confirmation. With respect to sitting upstaris or down, there really is little difference. We sat in the downstairs on our way to HK and on the upstairs on our return flight. Our return flight was completely ruined by a guy who snored - loudly - the entire trip. My husband and I both complained to the cabin attendants about the noise. I am a patient person, but this guy started snoring the minute the flight took off and never shut up. Noone else could sleep, he was that loud. After our third complaint, one of the flight attendants finally said something to him. Kept him quiet for about 30 minutes; he then resumed his snoring. Moral of the story; the seats don't matter as much as your fellow passengers. We were willing to transer to economy to get away from the guy.

On a more positive note, Cathay's business classs lounge at the HK airport is out of this world. Huge, with a noodle bar and all kinds of other (free) food. I highly recommend a visit if you have any time at all in a layover.
