Buying Jewelry in India
Am planning a 15 day trip to India leaving January 8. I have been told that there is beautiful jewelry and art objects to buy there but have no idea of who the reputable vendors are. Can anyone help with a few store names in Delhi, Jaipur or Varanasi?

I am in the jewelry business and buy from Jaipur merchants. I actually buy in Tucson AZ where they all come in early Feb. However, I do know that this is the best place to buy as that is where it is made.

I buy all my jewelry from Gem Palace in Jaipur, their jewelry is sold at Barneys New York at a much much higher price. They also have authentic art objects. I would also visit Amrapali in Jaipur. In Delhi I shop at Santushti which is near nehru park, there is store there which sells the most beautiful (good quality) cushion covers.

If you're tight on time in Delhi, go to the Cottage Industries Emporium. It has handicrafts from all regions of India. It's about 3 or 4 stories so allow about 2 hours there. It's run by the Government of India so the prices are fixed and the quality is usually quite good. They have everything from trinkets and key chains to carved furniture and rugs. It's been in business for 25+ years and anyone in Delhi know where it is.
In my opinion, buying jewelry and art in India is tricky because shopkeepers will often not hesitate to misrepresent the authenticity or quality of an item to tourists. Check out anything you want to buy carefully for workmanship BEFORE paying. Sales in India are final, no return, no exchange.
Cottage Industries is reputable for what they sell. If it's fake, they'll tell you. If it's real, they'll tell you and they don't hustle you to make a sale. At other shops, you have to not fall for smooth sales talk.

Gems & jewellery is one purchase, one needs to be very careful about. Unless you have thorough knowledge of the product, one should not buy it from any or every shop which has the items displayed on the window! A dishonest businessman can wreck your holiday. It may not be the question of money alone, the pleasure of purchase is lost for ever!!
To my knowledge the best jewellery can be bought at the Gems Palace, MI Road, Jaipur owned by the Kasliwals. The collection will amaze you. Amrapali on the Panch Batti, Jaipur is 'the' shop to buy silverware & objects de'Art. Very close to it is Jewels Emporium, owned by the Bohras. They too have some fine western designs in jewellery with assured quality.
The Tholias on the MI Road, Jaipur also have some authentic silver jewellery.
You may politely suggest a rebate on the price & they all will honour their customer.
The Ravissant in New Friends Colony, Delhi has some fine items in collection. They have an outlet in the Oberois, New Delhi.
Varanasi is rather known for Benares Silk.

If you are in Delhi, You can rush to the Cottage Industries Emporium, or State Emporiums of various states of India. This is located around Janpath in Delhi. You will get almost everything from handcrafted jewellery to antique junk material.
Paying a visit to Dilli Haat might also do you good. But a better bet is to go to the Cottage Industries Emporium. These are located in Delhi and Jaipur.
