Burmese itinerary - opinions solicited :)

Jump to last reply

We'll be in Burma for 19 nights from the end of January and I wanted to ask for any feedback on our itinerary from fellow Fodorites.

Just to give you some context for us, we have travelled in Asia previously but this is our first trip to Burma. This trip is part of a much longer itinerary I've entitled, The Mad Dash Across Too Much!" We're away from home for three and a half months and will be spending just over two months in SE Asia. We're starting in Bangladesh (rather than Nagaland which we had considered), making a stop in Bangkok which will be followed by Burma and hopefully some time in Malaysia. The insanity is fueled by frequent flyer mileage!

We had thought about doing some walking while we were in Burma but have decided against this as we will be trekking in the Chittagong Hill Tract just over the border in Bangladesh a few weeks before. Give the length of the overall trip we're hoping for a reasonable pacing which is why we have mainly three night stays. I'm not particularly inclined to add additional stops but I'm open to suggestion :). Do let me know if there's anything you wouldn't miss, or somewhere you'd lengthen or contract the stay.
My husband wonders if we should add a day in Mandalay and/or Yangon?

Many thanks to those of you who have written trip reports and/or posted links to photos, I found them all very helpful.

Here's what we are planning on, it's all fairly standard. As you can see we're flying into Mandalay and out of Yangon. I had hoped to include more overland or boat/train travel but this is what we've settled on so far.

Mandalay (2) ferry to
Bagan (3) fly to Heho
Inle Lake (3) two days on the lake including a daytrip to Sagar, fly via Yangon to
Sitwe (1) boat to
Mrauk U (3) fly to
Ngapali (4) fly to
Yangon (3)

As we are traveling for some time we're opting for mid-range hotels and it seems the biggest issue will be availability. We're working with Myanmar Shalom who have been responsive. I have built in free days without a guide in Bagan, Inle and Mrauk U as well as the entire time in Ngapali which is purely relaxation.

Thanks in advance for any help.

FYI I'll be blogging about the "Mad Dash" when (or maybe a little after!) it happens @
