I love about 5 days at alam s... we love the most expensive rooms: gangga and yumma because you get a huge private pool with them..
we like the other older rooms, next price down, but are less fond of the new rooms by the rice paddy.
they have a free shuttle to take you to down and back when ever you want..
breakfasts are fab---we love them delivered to our balcony..
neighborhood is quiet.. large temple down the road one way and monkey forest the other way..
big spa on site but we have not tried it..

I haven't stayed at the Chedi Club (or the 4 Seasons for that matter) but I've visited both many times. They're both luxury properties, with fine facilities and excellent service. The biggest difference to me would be that the 4S is located on the edge of a river gorge and has spectacular rain forest views, while the Chedi is a garden setting in the middle of rice fields.
The 4S's setting is spectacular, but me, the architecture is a bit overwhelming. The Chedi is more intimate.
For luxury in Ubud my favorite is Como Shambhala.
For suggestions that are half way between luxury and moderate, I'd suggest the Alila Ubud (especially the suites) and Kayu Manis. I haven't seen the Samaya Villas but hear they are quite nice too.
If you're still looking for a lower priced option, look at Alam Sari and any of the Komen group.
