Hope our fodorites are safe along with other fellow travellers. Wilko, hanuman and all who have helped us with great info ,our heart felt condolences. This incident looks deeper than what's being perceived. This magnitude is unfathomable.

I just heard it on the news. Sad. This is my neighborhood as I stay in a condo a block and a half down the street and also eat regularly at the Erawan Tearoom, directly above the shrine. The Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel is also right there near the shrine. I hope these bombings don't start up regularly again. I was in Bangkok during the New Year's Eve bombings some years ago. Now, let me get in touch with Thai friends.

Happy to hear some cherished Fodorites are all right. The Bangkok bombing is certainly on the news this morning in Tokyo (am in Japan for meetings). A long-time Thai friend was outside near her place of employment, the Anantara Siam (formally the Four Seasons), when the bomb went off not too terribly far away. She's fine and informs she and her colleagues will be doing all they can in assisting others over the next several days. Best of knowledge, my other Bangkok-based Thai friends and business colleagues are fine and coping in the immediate aftermath. Prayers to all.

Shocking thing & as above, no one seems to know who or why.
Friends had a lucky escape as they were in the area but went back to their hotel when one discovered he had left his medication, just a few minutes before the blast.

A terrible thing.
From a travellers perspective, this will have a profound affect on tourism in the capital.
The explosion occured at the Erewan Shrine. (Hyatt Hotel) - This is Ratchaprasong Junction near the Chit Lom BTS and those booked into hotels there tonight or in the next few days should check with hotels regards access etc.

I just got an e-mail from my best, Thai friend and she said that she got on the BTS at Siam at around 7:15PM, but didn't know what had happened as the bomb went off around 6:55. But, she said that she had never heard so many ambulances and noise and was wondering what was going on so she went on FaceBook and then found out. Since she lives in Suhumvit, she had to, of course, pass the area on the BTS. I've been waiting for some hours to hear from her and can now breathe easy that she's OK. Close call.

The authorities seem to have identified the suspect. A chilling video of the man in a yellow t-shirt leaving behind the backpack near the shrine.Sent shivers down my spine. Couldn't get myself to post the link
Hope they get him soon and make him pay for his sins.

Sathorn pier is the one they targeted. I hate back packs. They were used here in Boston to transport bombs. Our thai friend says they think the yellow shirted man may have been wearing a wig to blend in better. Hope they find him and who ever else helped him.
Our thoughts are with the Thai people, and families of all those hurt or killed in this horrid act.

I've also seen the photos - they are chilling - much like my reaction to the photos of the Boston bomber.
I'm glad the bomb at the Sathorn pier didn't hurt anyone.
So far, no firm ideas on the agenda behind the bombs.

Glad to hear that your friend is ok, Guenmai."
Thanks as I was really worried.
I just read an e-mail from my other Thai friend and she's also OK, but said that she had to drive to Central World to pick up two of her siblings as their movie was out at 8PM, so she was kind of in the middle of the chaos. I don't know if she knew about the bombing before she ended up in the traffic chaos.
Also the person who rents me the condo nearby said that there are renters in the condo right now and they missed the bombing by 10 minutes. I hope they aren't first-timers to Bangkok.
