It is a while since I was there, but I recall the Botanical Gardens as being very pleasant. A ride on the cable car is well worthwhile.
The Kek Lok See is one well-known temple, but there are many other temples in what is a very cosmopolitan place. If you can wangle yourself an introduction to the Penang Club, you will be made very welcome.

Geenie,
I have topped a thread for you on Penang, KL and Langkawi. Although it is two years old, the information given are excellent and still hold true.
I was there in February this year and have a wonderful time. In additon to the information given, do have a meal or just take a look at E & O hotel in Georgetown, it is quite a magnificant place.
Even though I do not agree with priracy but the DVDs there are so cheap and the quality is good ( a lot better than those of Thailand). In my moment of weakness I have succumbed - I have bought a dozen of them. Enjoy your trip.

Hire a trishaw for a few dollars and have the driver pedal you around georgetown.
Go for a meal in the main restaurant at the E & O - it's a lot less touristy (and way cheaper) than Raffles,
Eat at one of the street stalls at Gurney Drive.
Do a round island tour.
Go up the main hill taking the funicular.
Bargain at Batu Ferrenghi night market for "genuine" Guicci handbags fir $5

There is a great restaurant (if that is the right word) called the "Restaurant at the end of the world". It is in Batu Ferringhi - and has truly fabulous food. But its the surroundings are mind blowing - chickens and goats freeroaming the streets and praying the geckos don't fall in your food.-
