Best restaurant in Mumbai

We will be in Mumbai for just 1 night at the end of our Delhi-Kerala trip and would like to eat somewhere special. We're looking for really good Indian food, hip atmosphere, nice location ....one of these new trendy restaurants everyone is talking about! Any reccommendations or suggestions? We will be staying at the Marine Drive Intercontinental. Thanks!

I like Olive Bar & Kitchen. Or the Vie Lounge which yields awesome views at sunset. And Rain, also at Juhu.

Have been to Indigo at Colaba and the upper floor is quite good. Can't think of any more offhand.

I assume u want Indian food? the seafood restaurant in the President is near and great food - Konkan Cafe. Less ambience but great seafood also at Trishna in Kala Ghoda. A new hip place on the rooftop of a hotel in Colaba is Casbah. There is a restaurant on the beach at Marine Drive Chowpatty.

Definitely Indian or "nouveau/fusion indian" unfortunately I'm not a big fan of sea creatures. Thanks for the suggestions i'll look them up. More welcome!

Sharon1306 I looked up these places and they look like what we are looking for but how far is it to get to Juhu/Bandra from the centre? Does it take long in a taxi?

I love Olive, but this restaurant is a LONG drive from your hotel. The traffic in Mumbai is BAD. If you like Indian food, try Kandahar, the Indian restaurant at the Oberoi is good. The restaurant is within walking distance from your hotel, great view. This past february we had dinner at Masala Kraft a the Taj Mahal Hotel, very good food, beautiful restaurant. The food was not spicy. Indigo in Colaba is also very good, youngish crowd, they serve fusion food. I have never eaten at the President (Taj sister hotel) but have heard that the restaurants there are good.

I agree on the Khandahar recco. I love the Japanese restaurant Wasabi in the Taj, I think the sushi is better than the Nobus I have eaten at (London and Milan), they also have veggie sushi (this is India after all) and it always seems full of the fun Mumbai people. I think you could not go wrong with any restaurant in the Taj and its nice to just walk around the historic wing if you had not had a chance to see it; plus you can take the chance to drive up Marine Drive at night and see the Queen’s necklace lit up.

I like Indigo as well, get a table upstairs on the terrace esp now with the cool weather coming. However, I would not really call it Indian food, maybe Asian fusion on some items, but really its more continental in my view:

Indigo

Olive is Mediterranean food, not Indian. Also, Bandra will take about an hour without traffic and there is NEVER no traffic. It took me 2.5 hours recently, but that was during the day. I usually plan on 1.5 to 2 hours for the trip. If you go at night it is a bit better. Mumbai people in particular eat late at night you will be leaving later and returning later. Whatever you do, don’t show up before 8:30 pm at the very earliest (after 9 is better), or you will be in a very empty restaurant.

Carrom, to get to the Bandra/Juhu area at night would take you at least an hour by taxi. During the day the traffic is much worst, as already mentioned, especially getting to the suburbs during rush hour. Indigo at Colaba would be closer, its a nice hip place with a lot of young crowd. Also agree with the Kandahar at the Oberoi, which isn't too far from you're staying at, as well as cicerone's recommendation of the Wasabi at the Taj, if you like sushi.

Definitely stay in South Bombay and don't try to get to Bandra/Juhu. I was in Mumbai last weekend and the traffic was awful.
@Cicerone, I'm really impressed by your knowledge. I'm Indian, was a Bombay person before, but I don't know half of what you know!

You know that tourists always know cities better!! I used to live in Washington DC, and tourists are always telling me stuff I never knew...I am in Mumbai about 10 days a month so do feel like its a second home to me at this point.

Have you read Maximum City? I am about 2/3rd through, I don't know whether to laugh or cry...I used to like Mumbai more (other than the traffic...) but now think everyone is a gangster. Think I need to re-read the Godfather so I will have the same thought about New York and perhaps can get my balance back.

Thanks everyone. With all your suggestions I have looked up so many restaurants and clubs in Bombay that I wish I could stay longer! I think our final choice will be Indigo for dinner. Any comments on Joss or Moshe? We also have lunch next day. In fact our flight leaves at 2 am so we could squeeze in 2 dinners!! I'm really sad that Bandra/Juhu is too far because I would have liked to have seen a different part of the city. I have been twice before to Bombay & stayed at the Taj once so was more keen on places outside the hotel circuits. Also upon reflection we will have already stayed for one week in Delhi and 9 days in Kerala so if the food isn't really totally Indian it's ok. As long as it's not Italian!!

Mumbai has very good chinese restaurants, one which stands out is China Garden at Crossroads. The restaurant is very popular with the locals. You would have to take a taxi, the restaurants is 20 minutes drive from your hotel. While there you can do some shopping at Crossroads. Would recommend making a reservation. I have never eaten at Joss, but have heard good things about it, the restaurant is in Kala Ghoda, which is also close to your hotel.

I travel to Mumbai several times a year on business and stay in that part of the city. The Intercontinental is on my 'short list' of favorites. The Indian restaurant at the Intercontinental (called Kebab) is actually very good. If you're feeling tired or lazy you won't compromise much by eating there. You don't really need the menu--just tell them what you want/like and they will accomodate you. Khandahar at the Oberoi (10 minute walk)is less hip/more classic but also recommended. If you're tired of Indian, go for Indigo or the Salt Water Grill (which is not as fish-centric as the name implies). They also fall into the category of restaurants that "everyone is talking about."

danj - We are considering staying at the Intercontinental (on Marine Drive) for a visit to Mumbai in December. Would you recommend this hotel? How does it compare with staying at the Taj or the Oberoi? Thanks for any thoughts....
