Best of Malaysian cuisine?
Hi
I'm going to Malaysia in March. We will stay with some friends in KL for a few days so I hope that they will be able to take us out so we can try lots of different Malaysian food. Does anyone have recommendations when it comes to Malaysian food that I have to try
Regards

i think you must not miss the street food because that is waht the average malaysians like and also where the 'real' malaysians hang out . i am sure your friends will take you to their favourite satay or fried kaoy teow or roti canai or roti masala or nasi lemak or yong tau foo or barbequed chicken wings or beef noodle etc etc. all washed down with teh tarik or teh halia (ginger tea with milk)
in kl you will be spoilt for choice for this type of hawker food. if you want fancy restaurants there are plenty too. the 'happening' places in kl keeps changing - but bangsar and sri hartamas is popular with locals. bangsar has a few streets of restaurants for you to choose from and also an area with street food too. and on saturday night there used to be a night market.
by the way gard, if you like rock climbing, the largest indoor wall climb in asia is in kl at one of the malls (may be wan utama)

Hello Gard,
Glad you'd be in KL in March. OK, for some hard facts on where to chow-down in KL (places not to hard to reach)...
- Brickfield Road; great Indian "banana leaf rice"
- Bangsar's Jalan Telawi 2, Rocky Restaurant, myriad of Chinese hawker goodies; it's near a swanky street Jalan Telawi 3 that's fringed by hip cafes and bars for after-dark party revellers.
- Kampung Baru for the one-of-a-kind "nasi lemak" (coconut cream rice) with curried beef, anchovies, cucumber, fried chicken ... etc
- Colisuem Cafe for the best steaks
- Jalan Alor's street hawker food. It's only open at night, lots of local food to choose from.
- Kampung Baiduri's (in Petaling Jaya) nasi kandar. Very tasty Indian Moslem dishes eaten with briyani rice.
I hope your KL friends know where these places are.

So the Colisuem is still going. I've often wondered about that, I remember having a great steak meal there in the late 70s.
I really like the nonya cooking and the nasi padang meals, several tasty curries with rice. I recommend looking out for a good nasi padang restaurant.
