Best beaches in Sri Lanka

I am planning a trip to India in early January and want to go check out a beach in Sri Lanka afterwards, Iwoud like some suggestions as great beaches to go . I am not looking for a party beach atmosphere at all--just thought I would add that. Thanks

There was so much to see in Sri Lanka, we didn't go to a beach. Oh, we went to the airport early and ate dinner on the beach in Negombo, but it isn't the beat beach (just very close to the airport). Take a look at the websites of a couple of the travel agents there - Boutique Sri Lanka and Red Dot - and see what they recommend for beaches.

Hi,
There are lots of amazing beaches in sri lanka. But i would prefer Nliaveli beach which has beautiful surroundings and sparkling water.

Starc gives you good advice, Nilaveli beach on the East Coast is really superb, offers wide expanse of beach, calm blue sea and great solitude too most times (except long weekends and school holidays when it may get crowded by locals)

However please do note that Sri Lanka has two very distinct seasons.

The East Coast (Nilaveli, Trincomalee, Passekudah etc) is good from April - August

and

the West and South coast (Kalpitiya, Bentota, Galle, Mirissa, Tangalle etc is good from December - April.

If you go to the wrong place at the wrong time of year it will be lousy and very rough seas, sadly many people still don't seem to understand this!

Hey Kathie, thanks for those kind words, I try to help people where I can and in my own travels too I do benefit a lot from other travellers and locals who share information and give advice.

Talalla beach near the southern tip was secluded and pretty last April. About 12 km east of Matata. We only saw a smattering of visitors from our (somewhat odd but ok, IMO) hotel and a few nearby bungalows. More fishermen (not the pole fishing, just people dragging boats and nets out) and locals putting toes in than tourists. Nice and peaceful, we thought.
