How to dress for a trip to Beijing in February? On a week-long tour, know it will be cold. Any suggestions? Most comfortable for touring/walking=tennis shoes & socks, jeans, sweater, short top-coat; but is this "too casual"? Should I be no-so-confortable but more presentable in slacks, nicer long overcoat, etc.? This probably sounds silly, but I'm really in a quandary. Responses most appreciated.

Marie,
Unless you have business meetings, please dress casual and warm. "Casual" dressing is considered cool nowadays in China. It's pretty cold in February in Beijing. There is no need to buy a new down jacket, though. You can get a Northface down jacket at Silk Alley in Beijing for less than $30. And many people believe that they are genuine North Face. Definitely bring long-johns. Some of the cabs don't have heat. Hiking boots and jeans are good.
By the way, if you need help arranging your tour to China, we at ChinaOnYourMind.com can help. We specialize in custom private tours. We can also book hotels at great discount.

Yes, it will be co-o-o-old! Myself, I would go for a longer coat and leather walking shoes; not to look more dressed-up, but just to be warmer. Or you could try layering with the nice silk underwear that so many companies sell nowadays. And don't forget a hat and gloves; that's where all the heat leaves your body!
