I believe the business centre has PC/terminals you can use for free internet access, call or send them an e-mail to confirm. I believe their club floor lounge also has at least one PC/terminal.

You may also be able to access the internet from the TV in your room using a keyboard provided with the TV (usually wireless); check the hotel's website to see if they have this feature, or call or e-mail them to confirm.

Try going to either a Pacific Coffee (there are 3 in Beijing, go to pacificcoffee.com for locations), or a local cyber café to check on e-mail every day or so. For a list of cyber cafes in most cities in the world, go to cybercafe.com.

I would never in a million years take a laptop on what is supposed to be a vacation. I consider that a work instrument and don't need to be remined of work. Perhaps we are from different generations.

I don't like to carry it around number one its to heavy ,and I would prefer not to lug it through airports and be constantly taking it out of its case to go through security. While I would not have any concerns about leaving it in your hotel room in Asia (I have been doing so for the last 15 years), there is always that chance. As you say, it could get lost or stolen elsewhere.

If you are flying coach, I am not sure how you will watch movies on it, becaue the person in front of you is sure to recline his/her seat for most if not all of the flight other than during meals and you may not be able to put the table down and get the screen up enought to watch the movie. If you are in business class that will be a little easier, but still awkward if you want to recline and watch.

You will of course have to pay that connection fee if you get a laptop.

If you need to access e-mail consider getting a blackberry which is excellent for that purpose. Anipod with a movie screen is good for movies (God knows how people watch them that small, that IS another generation), a digital camera and extra memory sticks work for pictures. There is no need to lug the laptop for any of the purposes you mentioned. You can access the web from a Blackberry, albeit sometimes it is slow and there is sometimtes limited functionality; the Blackberry is also a phone which works in Asia/US (not Japan) which is quite helpful.

If you need to access the web because you feel a compelling need to surf or play games every few days, then you probably need a vacation from THAT....

My thoughts exactly..what is it with this younger generation? I see so many on vacation banging away at their laptops...ugh! I usually hop into a cyber joint once a week while traveling, check my e-mail, write a letter or two...and walk out with free hands. Bingo!
Guess what! The business will still be there when you return...so will the boss if you're working for someone else. What's he/she going to do...fire you for not checking in every day or two? Tell him/her to take a hike! (You'll feel better for it!)

I don't use my laptop for work....only pleasure and travel. If your worried about weight, you should check out the Sony Vaio TX series

http://digbig.com/4qwsb

It's great!

Takes up no room at all and is very light(I can carry it with two fingers, but I don't). A little pricey but I love it......wouldn't travel without it.

Aloha!

I'm probably older than you guys.but hey a girl doesn't broadcast her age!
It's just such a long flight and I never sleep much on planes.
I really didn't want another memory stick getting a digital SLR.

I don't do "work" on the laptop or games I just use it for everything..google earth, translation, travel sites and I do tripjournal (everyone seems to enjoy it)

Trips for me are not relaxation or rest(I stay home for that)It's all about the adventure.
I can use the computer cafes I suppose I just think the Beijing one will be a challenge.
I do have cingular I will check into it..Aloha

Most of the hotels in China ofer free broadband internet connection. However note that pc or laptop is not provided free of cost.It is assumed that you will bring-in one or hire from the hotel.Never hire a laptop or a pc from the hotel..they are very very expensive. Also never use business centre for internet connection as they are so expensive. In some ofthe hotels they charge one Yuan for one minute!!!
There are so many 24x7 internet cafes in china where the fee is only yuan 2-3 per hour!!!!So walk outsid eof the hotel and ask any young person for the internet cafe..they will help you.

If you can beat 1929, then you're right..you are older. Congratulations grandma!

Adventure? Yes, everyone of my journeys has been a glorious adventure
....with a lap, but without a laptop.

Stu,
no, I cannot beat that .I've always had TV and coincidently your birthyear is my age!!!haha...As some of your generation have no interest or inclination to use the computer, I commend you!!

My mother hates computers, refuses to participate and doesn't care for people who do. My father uses his for email and the occasional lookup(yes they are still together).I keep trying to tell tham what you can do but once you're left behind it's hard to catch up..

I don't use a phone when I travel outside the states and I have not taken a laptop before. But on our last few trips I came to the realization that it was a lot of trouble ,time and money trying to find and type on the euro-keyboard in one of those cafes. My partner complains about it..and he is just watching

I used to do a written journal but had trouble keeping it up on a blitz trip. I started the etripjournal because I found it difficult to remember what exactly we had to eat if I didn't do it right away.So what I have been doing is keeping and sending(to friends and family) an short ejournal(every two or three days) and then fleshing it out when I get home and printing it....It works for me IF you can easily and cheaply access the net. And the way I figure it why have a laptop if you never carry it....

Wrong again...although I'm probably beyond your mom and dad's generation, I've been deeply involved as one of the early day pioneers with computers since 1956 at Lincoln Labs , MIT..later with The Rand Corporation in Santa Monica, I wrote the very first programmer's manual for a series of Air Defense computers (1958)...so I've been around for the multitude of changes and on into the first series of PC's....wife and I each have a Dell now, but my first PC was the first one that HP came out with. Keep going , kid...you're on a roll..

If you wanna lug that LapTop all over China, go right ahead..your choice.

Did you misunderstand my compliment?...You don't consider youself the average do you?
"some of your generation have no interest or inclination to use the computer" is a true statement..
As a woman I may be ignorant or mistaken but never "wrong" ..wink..
And as far as the "kid" comment.... Thanks I'm old enough to be flattered..

Hyp:

My ancient eyes deceived me...I just re-read...so thanks for the compliment. However, I do hope you'll reconsider hauling that laptop all over China, I also understand they are prime targets for theft anywhere in the world.
"Here's to you, kid!"
