Have a one night stop-over enroute from USA to Phuket. Early morning departure from Bangkok Airport to Phuket. Any recommendations for either the Sheraton Grande or the Conrad. Probably will just relax by the pool and sleep to recover from the jet lag. Which hotel would be more comfortable and shortest distance to the airport?

Can't talk about the Sheraton, but we had 2 stays in Dec 05/Jan 06 at the Conrad. It's certainly nice enough..not hugely luxurious, but nice. Service is good if a bit impersonal. Breakfast is lovely. Pool area is very nice, though shady for much of the day. Meals by the pool are quite nice though. Spa is hit or miss...I had one fabulous body scrub/massage treatment and the next day a horrible massage with a different person. Took us 20 minutes to get to the airport at 9:30 on a Sunday morning. 15 minutes at 4:00 AM 2 weeks later. If you have HHonors gold status, you get breakfast but no upgrade. If you are diamond, you might get an upgrade...depends. The corner rooms you are upgraded to aren't as great as we expected...the standard rooms are just as good imo.

The Conrad might be ever so slightly eaiser to get to the airport from, but it really depends on the day and time. I think the Conrad is a bit quieter than the Sheraton (there's a restaurant next to the Sheraton that makes an awful racket at street level, but I don't know how noticable it is from the rooms).

Well, If it's a morning flight to phuket than the traffic is not an issue because early in the morning it's ok.

From Sheraton to the HW is 5 minutes on Sukumvit to the entrance opp Soi 0 and from Conrad it's a bit more problematic because you need to make a U-Turn on Wireless, go up on Wittayu, go into Soi nai-lert and back on Ploenchit to the HW...not so conveniant if traffic.

Anyway, if you are not planning to go out of the hotel, why not taking something closer to the airport? (Amari airport...)

If you're going to be around for lunch, the Conrad has unbelievably super dim sum.

One more option - Four Seasons, how does that compare to the Sheraton Grande and Concord for proximty to the airport and comfort.

The Four Seasons is GREAT. I'd stay there again in a heartbeat. perfect location in Bangkok.

With that said, the Four Seasons and the other hotels are all in the center of Bangkok.

If you're not interested in seeing Bangkok, there is little reason to go there. Depending on the time of day (or night) allow a minimum of 30 minutes to or from the airport but understand it could run to an hour.

Consider the Amari Hotel. You can walk to it from the airport. The pool is OK but you can't beat the location.

The Amari is ridiculously expensive for a very mediocre property. There are hotels near the airport that are much cheaper. I've used the Rama Gardens. For under US$100 you get a large Exec, room, buffet breakfast and airport shuttle.

If you have time to go out to dinner, I'd certainly go into Bangkok. There are so many wonderful restaurants! Of the places you listed, the Four Seasons would be my first choice for a one night stay. It really depends on just how much time you have.

We stayed at the Sheraton Grand Sukhumvit and loved it. The rooms are among the largest that we've stayed in Bangkok.

Really nice pool area with lots of shade and a tropical river theme to the place.

Great restaurants on property (Basil,Rossini's). Excellant location right on the skytrain's Asok stop.

Shopping and more restaurant possibilities all around the hotel on Sukuhumvit Rd and surrounding sois with lots of interesting street action.

If you have to leave for the airport between 5 pm to 9 pm I wouldn't stay here as we experienced a 15 minute ride from the front door to the street as the traffic can get really bad on Sukhumvit especially on a Friday or Saturday nite.

Went past the Four Seasons last week, looked like it was in undergoing quite a refurbisment. Most of the bedroom windows had paper over them

The Sheraton is right in front of the skytrain. The Conrad is a fairly long walk.

The Conrad has a shuttle bus that goes to the skytrain stop.

its a toss up...the conrad is the newer hotel...both have fantastic restaurants...both have nice rooms...the area around the conrad is nicer, but there is maybe a bit more to do around the sheraton...i think it might be quicker from the conrad but not totally sure...if the traffic is bad on sukhumvit then sheraton might be more difficult...

you would not be unhappy with either...the pool area, while small, at the sheraton is quite nice...on weekends it is very full...i have not looked at the conrad pool...as gpanda says the dim sum is the best in the world, imo
