Bangkok serviced apartments question

I know there have been multiple questions on this topic, so apologies for the repeat.

I'm trying to nudge my husband towards a family trip to Thailand for next Feb (3 kids, ages 10-15). From previous posts, I know that a serviced apartment seems to be the way to go with a family or gorup(wish I could splurge for 2 rooms at the Pen or Oriental though).

- My preference would be to be on the river. Did I read somewhere that the Centre Point Silom is being renovated? I would love the location, but the rooms look a bit dated.

- Is anyone familiar with the Conrad Bangkok Residences? The price for a 2 bedroom apt is quite good, and one can use all the facilities (pool, etc) of the hotel. (but its not on the river)

- I did look at the famous Marrriot riverside, but the room prices look to be about $200+ each (from huahin20)....

Any other suggestions, particularly for a nicely decorated/designed riverside apartment?

Thanks

There are not a lot of serviced apartment buildings on the river. I'm a serviced apartment resident. However, Emporium is opening it's brand new serviced apartment building in August 2007 and it's right on the river...emporiumsuites.com. To stay in that area and in the few buildings that exist over there compared to the tons that exist in other parts of Bangkok, then you will probably have to pay a premium price for something that is not as you put it,"dated". Happy Travels!

hi cruise....the emporium is building a new set of 3 buildings right on the river and they should be ready by summer....

the marriott mayfair, near the conrad, has been a favorite for a couple of fodors families....we have toured it and it is very nice...

we were going to look at the conrad but did not...great location...

centre point wireless also might be to your liking...

CP silom is undergoing reno, but they now say it will not interfer with guests???

the marriott resort would be perfect for you but i think the cost would be about $150 or so per nite ++....look at asia rooms as i found them cheaper for marriott this year???

the kids would be the happiest at the marriott riverside i think because of the superior pool and the mini mall with mcdonalds, etc and videos.....but you would need the two rooms...

We happen to be staying at the Conrad residence right now in a one bedroom apt. It is great!! The rooms are not enormous, but they are good sized. The pool is quite nice. There is a separate entrance, check in desk, and elevators for the residence (they are on the 8-15 floor of the hotel), but the residence elevator does stop on the pool floor. There is a shuttle to the nearest sky train station. There is a small mall attached to the hotel that has a grocery store in it, so buying snacks and breakfast stuff is easy. There is a DVD player in the room that will play US DVDs and a ton of English speaking TV channels too. If there is anything else I can help you with about it, let me know! We are here for a while longer.

The one thing that may be an issue for you here, is that I think that you have to stay for 7 nights to book a residence room. I am not positive about that though.

Lisa-

Thanks for the "live" on-sight comments.
Did I read correctly that you are able to order hotel room service to the residence rooms?

Guen& Bob- Thanks for the helpful comments.

cruisinred-You get all hotel amenities, so yes you can order room service to the residence rooms. They have a full kitchen as well.

rhkkmk-We have a one bedroom and the cost is 4500 baht per night (approx $137 USD)

Also included here is bottled water (they restock with lots of bottles in the room daily and give you water at the pool). There are washers and dryers on 4 of the residence floors and there is no charge for those.

Hello All,

Am now looking for 2 BR serviced apts for our family of 5 -kids aged 15-9. for our 3 day BKK stopover. Got a reply from Silom Center Point that the 2 BR will not be available in Aug. due to renovations.

Lisa, what website did you use for your Conrad reservation?

Found a $188 nett for the Siri Sathorn. The Somerset Bangkok Getaway Package averaged about $150 ++ per night including RT transfers among other things. Somerset Sanplu for $138. CP Sukhumvit THong Lo at $167- you had said it was tired though. I'll check on CP Wireless & Ascott.
Could not find Mayfair Marriott or Emporium rates lower than $200 though.

Seems like this forum has more expertise on serviced apts as opposed to another one I have been visiting, Given that, which of those is best:
-best kept rooms, facilities, closest to BTS, close to shops, convenient stores .

Right now Siri Sathorn is on top of my list- seems like I have to change my top of the list property almost every other day. HELP !!!

Thanks in advance.

Is the Siri Sathorn the one on Soi Saladang? If so, I remember passing it on the way to check out a new condo building down at the end of the street. Soi Saladang is a nice, residential street, but I didn't notice the skytrain nearby. I was in a taxi and kept looking to see if I could see the skytrain. Plus, there wasn't a lot of going-ons in the area. Street names would be helpful when you post this information.
As for Centre Point in Thong Lor. I think that's the building I passed in a taxi, too and didn't stop because it was too far from the skytrain station.

I've been to Centre Point Wireless and personally didn't like the treatment I received from the person that was showing a Thai freind and I around. Now, maybe you'll have a different experience. As for the price, it's not inexpensive. One of the apartments I was shown was an 80-square meter 2-bedroom which I found cramped. I live in an 80-square meter, studio at Emporium and for less than what they wanted for their 80-square meter two bedroom. The building is, however closer to things/happenings than the others you're considering. The Ascott...I assume you mean Ascott Sathorn...I've been to and has beautiful apartments but again not in an alive area. It's very near the Siri Sathorn.
As for the Somerset Suanplu, I can't remember where it is off the top of my head, but I know of it and the other Somersets. I've been to the Somerset Suan Park View on soi, Ton Son which is extremely well located right down the street from Central Department store at Chitlom skytrain station. I'd go for that one although the apartments are a bit dated. But, you're only there for three days. The location is the best for the price range you're looking for. They had excellent rates when I was shown around. I remember the special rate was about $1200. for three WEEKS for a 60 square-meter, one-bedroom. This was in summer 2005 for a December 2005 stay. High season. Happy Travels!

Since you cannot get the Centre Pointe I would recommend the Somerset Suwan Park View. Perfect location (50m from Chitlom skytrain station) and walking distance to many shopping malls/department store and restaurants. Well maintained fairly large suites with a friendly and helpful staff. A 2 bedroom (125sqm) through a discounter is around $146 net with breakfast but you will pay extra for 5 people. A 3 bedroom (hugh at 233sqm)is about $200.

Thanks for all your input. Somerset Park being 50 m from Chitlom Train Station is certainly putting Somerset in the top of my list now.

I think you'll be quite happy at Somerset Suan Park View Serviced Apartment building. The place was immaculate when I was shown around there and the staff great. There's a nice pool and they have a laundry room that takes tokens in the washers. Plus, with Central Chitlom Department Store up the street, you'll have a lot of eating options. The Loft, which is inside Central Chitlom Department store, is a food court...top floor area... which has tons of different choices of food. So your kids will have lots to choose from... Thai/ Indian/ Chinese/ Western and everything in between. When you enter the food court, you'll be given a plastic card. You hand that to the different food vendors that you choose and they add the amount of your food cost to that card. When you finish going from vendor to vendor and after eating, then take the food card...upon exit...to the cashier and it will be scanned and you'll be given your food total. It's very easy. You only have to deal with money upon exiting the food court.
There's also a nice restaurant inside of Somerset Suan Park View. It's a New Orleans-style restaurant that's quite popular I hear. I assume it's still there. So, hope you find an apartment building to fit your needs. Have fun. Happy Travels!

Thanks you all so much for your very informative tips. I'm now finally down to just 2 choices- Somerset Suan Park & Siri Sathorn.

That's a great improvement from the plethora of choices I was considering a week ago.

thanks cruisinred for getting this thread started.

centre points are a good chain of aparments to try looking up. They have quite a few all round bangkok so depending on where you want to stay, maybe you want to give them a try.

Thanks for the reply lisa. I could not top the price of Somerset at less than $180. Conrad's 2 BR were all at LEAST $200++. So for now, it's Somerset Suanplu for us. What I plan to do if I am not very happy with Somerset Suanplu during our 3 night stay is scout out Siri Sathorn then decide if its worth staying at on our way back to Tokyo.
Appreciate your help.
