We can travel on free, airline passes wherever United flies. We are thinking of these two places - only have five days. Would like to bargain shop (read that as knock-offs), sightsee, and eat (nothing fancy).
Any suggestions anyone?

Singapore is really no longer a place for bargain shopping. Bangkok is a less expensive city with fabulous shopping. I don't have any interet in knock-offs, I'm more interested in unique items. But those who like knock-offs can find them in Bangkok.
I don't know what part of the world you are coming from, but if you are coming from Europe or North America, 5 days isn't a lot after all of that flying. Do you actually have 5 days on the ground in Asia or does 5 days include your travel time?
5 days in Singapore is too long i think. 2 days is about enough to see all the sites. As for shopping, Bangkok is much better than Singapore these days - more variety and cheaper. 5 days isn't enough for shopping in Bangkok actually!
Definitely Bangkok. There is so much to see and do. IMHO Singapore is vastly overated as a tourist destination. The only problenm with Bangkok is that most people will want to return again and again....
This is not even close. Bangkok is a magical place that can fascinate for weeks, Sing-apore is worth 2 or 3 days. Definitely Bangkok.
Begin on a Thursday and return on a Monday - coming from Chicago. I know it isn't long but better than not going.
Thanks everyone - Bangkok it is - this is like polling the audience on game shows!
its bangkok....bargains galore
definitely bangkok. no secondthought.
