Bangkok or Bali?

Depends on what your interests are. Bangkok is a big, crowded, polluted city vs. Bali, which is a relatively small island. You get beaches (not great but beaches nonetheless) in Bali, lots of unique, inexpensive shopping (Ubud, the cultural center, is the best). I think Bali would be more navigable in 3 days than Bangkok.

While I like Bangkok, I agree 3 days is impossible for a huge, polluted sprawling city where you may spend hours just to travel to the next attraction. Bangkok would compare with Jakarta in that respect. If you're looking for culture, the Balinese Hindu culture is just as fascinating as the Thai Buddhist culture, perhaps even more so in that it is practiced openly in ceremonies and temples and at home.

In Bangkok the Mandarin Oriental on the river is great. (I hope I have the name right)

All depends on how evergetic you're feeling - you can pack a lot into 3 days if you go to Bangkok and go for it. Amazing shopping, amazing food, beautiful temples, plus, you can't beat the experience of careering round the city in a tuk tuk! It's where I'd go.

Hi John, there are thousands of hotels in BKK, and it all depends on what you want to do. The Oriental, on the river, very sleek and somptuous, with a great history, is what the Thais consider the best. In front of the Oriental I really like the Peninsula, very modern, with large rooms and good service. In the city, the Regent is very nice - all white, in colonial style, with a great courtyard and very good service. It all depends what you plan to do. The river is fine, but allow yourself at least 30 mins each way to commute with downtown. E-mail me if you need further info !
