My wife and I are going to Bangkok and Kathmandu in March. We have just over a week there. Should we just make our own arrangements and plan our own excursions, or should we arrange tours and excursions through an agency before we go? And if we use an agency, which one? Any advice, suggestions and recommendations are welcome.

I can't comment on Kathmandu, but in Bangkok, tours and excursions are very easy to arrange on the spot. It's what I did and it worked out beautifully. Enjoy!
I've been to both, and would recommend that you arrange excursions there. In Kathmandu, simply hire a car and driver to take you where you want to go. In Bangkok, you may want to do the same, but with all the traffic, you'll often find that water taxis are quicker for places along the river.
