Bangkok in 3 days - Weekdays

Hi,

I'll be going to Bangkok this December. I'm from the Northern Malaysia, so I'll be going there by land, which means, I'll take the train from Padang Besar to Bangkok. Although I've been to Thailand before, but this will be my first time in Bangkok. I went to Hat Yai quite a number of times already and once to Krabi and Phuket. Can anyone comment on my itineraries as follow?

11/12:
Taking train from Padang Besar to Bangkok

12/12:
Arrive in Bangkok around noon.
River cruising.
Sunset viewing.
(Suggestion for night market?)

13/12
Wat Pho
Grand Palace
Khao San Road

14/12
Day trip to Ayutthaya

15/12
Going back to Malaysia

Is is ok? Is there any suggestion on Floating Market that open on weekdays that I can visit? And, can anyone suggest where should I stay? I' considering Sukhumvit, but read somewhere that it is quite noisy during night. So, I'm considering Siam area instead. But, to minimize the travelling cost, I'm considering Khao San area too although it will be very noisy during night. So, I really need your suggestions on this.

Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill,

I think your itinerary for Bangkok looks ok, apologies I don't have suggestions for a night market.

I have however stayed in Sukhumvit a number of times and can recommend Suk11 Hostel. It's set back from the road, very charming, has dorms or rooms depending on your budget. Good place to meet other travellers if you wish but equally easy to keep yourself to yourself. I would say if you're worried about noise, avoid Khao San area.

Best wishes,

Cam

The Khao San area doesn't automatically mean it'll be noisy at night. Have a look at the New Siam Riverside hotel on Phra Athit. Phra Athit runs parallel to the Chao Phraya river, and the New Siam fronts onto the river. It's excellent value for money, and only a few minutes walk fro Khao San with plenty in-between.

A minute walk from the New Siam is Pier 13, wher you catch the Orange Flag ferry. A ticket for any pier up or down the river costs 15 baht

Another accommodation to have a look at is the New Siam Palace View, which is in the same area but not on the river.

For your Ayutthaya trip, there are regular trains starting early morning from Hualamphong train station. Takes about 2.5 hours, far safer than going by van, and far cheaper than a private tour.

On arrival at Ayutthaya you can easily hire a tuk tuk for a few hours to take you round the historical sights. All the tuk tuk drivers have a standard tour.

Asiatique is the main nightmarket, but quite upscale.

I'd skip Khao san rd

Over the last 30 years we have stayed in most areas in Bangkok and still have trouble deciding which is the "best" place to stay.

We have been flitting to and from Bangkok over the last few months during a long jaunt around Asia and have most recently stayed in both Sukhumvit 11 and close to the Khao San Road. Here is my take on those two area.

In Suk we stayed at the new Mercure. A very nice 4* place, large rooms good service, terrible wifi. My main concern, however, is with the location. Yes it is easy to get to the BTS and MRT BUT, the are seems mostly to be frequented by visitors who seem to mostly be middle- aged and old age men both western and Middle Eastern intent on getting drunk and entertaining themselves with Thai prostitutes!

I haven't been to the KHS for many years. I was going to stay at the New Siam Riverside as suggested by LL above, but another Accor Hotel came up on a special deal. The Ibis Styles Khaosan Viengtai. It is on the road parrellel to KHS. Close to the river, which is good and also Wat Po, the Grand Palace etc are within walking distance. The hotel itself is very modern, reasonably priced and good value. The area has calmed down a lot from the days of "The Beach" but still attracts a mostly young crowd. A bit tacky, but not to bad.

Night markets are not what they used to be in Bangkok but it depend what sort of night market you are looking for. Chinatown at night is great fun and that would be my choice

Can you stay longer than 3 days? Long train ride for just a few days. Air Asia sometimes has some sales for flying between Malaysia to Bangkok. (Also maybe Nok Air and Thai Lion from Hat Yai.) Couple hours in a plane vs a whole day on a train! (Bangkok has 2 airports, by the way - Don Muang and Suvarnabhumi. Some cheap airlines use old Don Muang.)

There is subway service from Hulalamphong Train station that connects with Skytrain and Airport Rail Link.

In Bangkok tourists from Malaysia and Singapore often choose Pratunam area. Some for shopping and some because they are afraid of being near nightlife. Which is silly because there is some good cheap accommodation, access to Skytrain and subway and some good shopping sometimes only a short walk from nightlife.

For hotel help include a price range in Thai baht.

I like the Sukhumvit area. Probably no noisier than places you chose in Hat Yai. If you are next to a bar or karaoke place you might hear the music. Windows closed, A/C on high I wouldn't hear much. Try to avoid rooms street side and if possible higher up will be quieter.

Don't know if you are male or female, Atlanta Hotel is protective of female tourists. Sukhumvit Road Nana area.

I think the Suk 11 Hostel is closed now. December is high season. Hotel bookings at higher prices and more demand for rooms especially close to Christmas and New Years holidays.

Makkasan Inn. Pratunam area. Walk from Ratchaprorop Rail Link stop. Pratunam shopping, Rail Link connects to Skytrain and subway.

No rail service Khao San Road area. Maybe one of the below hotels will do. (Depends on price range.) Some tourist things you can walk to. Use your computer to research the area.

Siam area. Not far from MBK, not far from Skytrain - Wendy House.

Some tourists visit the overpriced Pat Pong Night Market. MBK Mall is huge, open all day up to 10 PM and is air conditioned. Some of the junk sold at night markets found there too. MBK is off a Skytrain stop. Google search will give you some night market suggestions.

Google up scams to avoid for Bangkok! Some scams include tuk-tuks, palace closed, gold a precious stones, etc. Meter taxis are cheaper than tuk-tuks providing you pay the meter fare!! Research using taxis Bangkok. My advice for taxis is to avoid parked taxis and wave a moving taxi over. Never start your conversations with "how much" for a ride. Don't immediately get in the cab, tell the driver to use the meter first. When a driver asks for a flat rate say thanks and goodbye. Meter is cheaper. (There are many, many taxis in Bangkok.)

When a driver agrees to use the meter THEN get in the cab. Have small bills and coins. If alone I keep my bag on the seat and not out of sight in the trunk/boot. I get out dragging the bag and then pay the meter fare! (Google up using taxis in Bangkok.)

Fly if you can!

Good luck.
