Bangkok Hotel- near BTS & late check out

Would love some tips on some good hotels in Bangkok that are within a 5-10 minute walk of a BTS station and offer late checkout. I'm SPG gold, but tend to have issues with them allowing late checkout even though it's 'guaranteed'. (Same with the auto-upgrades...) So I'm not partial to them...

I've only stayed on the river before, namely in the Krungthep (sp?) wing of the Shangri-La, which is crazily convenient for BTS & river boats. I'll be flying in from Laos at some point Thursday (most likely into DMK, no flight booked as of yet) and I've got a 2am flight out of BKK on a Sunday morning, so only 2 nights this go-around, so thinking somewhere more central may be best?
Unsure what I'll be up to Friday, but plan on spending most of Saturday at JJ as I have a long list of items from friends/family... hence the want for a late checkout (even 4pm would be great!)

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

On my last trip to Bangkok, I got a late check out at the Anantara Siam Hotel (formerly Four Seasons Hotel) right at Rajadamri BTS station. I think it was either a 3PM or 4PM check out, but I requested it upon check in, and then was told that they could tell me about a day before my check out date as they had to see who would be checking in and at what times. This is one reason why it's good for travelers to let a hotel know what their arrival time and check out time will be as if a guest isn't arriving until in the evening, then the guest before them might be able to keep the room longer which is how I have been granted late check outs at various hotels. I'll need to request the same, again, at the Anantara Siam on the upcoming trip as on check out day, my flight on to my next country isn't until 7:45PM.

So, I either e-mail the hotel beforehand and put in the request or wait until I get to the hotel and then put in the request.

Happy Travels!

You can never guarantee late check out. But to give yourself the best chance, I'd stay at an SPG property. Going somewhere where you have no status makes its very unlikely you will get late check out.

Also, if you can't get late checkout, you can at least leave your luggage at the hotel and they will likely offer you a place where you can shower before you head to the airport. I find staying on the river is convenient for getting to the airports.

Thank you both!

@Kathie- I haven't had luck at SPG with status and getting late checkout, so it's just as likely (for me anyway... ha!) no matter where I stay!

@Guenmai- I looked at the Anantara, it looks lovely but a bit more than I'd like to spend this trip.

I'd love to find a smaller boutique hotel, but it's seems difficult to determine that from internet photos, and I blew my flight budget (whoops) hence why I'm not looking to stay al SL this time (although it was lovely) I'd love to stay around $100-120/night, but as a single female with seemingly horrible luck traveling in Asia, I'll pay for more luxury & security if necessary.

On a different note- on previous trips to Bangkok I didn't do much in terms of exploring when it came to food, usually too exhausted from sightseeing all day. Are there certain areas more conducive to walking around/have a good selection of restaurants? I feel like Bangkok (from what I've seen) is akin to Dallas- you can't just 'stroll around' you need to drive/use BTS to get anywhere... am I missing something?!

OK.

I had noticed that above you mentioned that you had stayed at the Shangri-La, so I thought that that was the price range that you were going for. I stayed at both the Shangri-la and the Anantara Siam on the last trip and paid less at the Anantara Siam; $275.68 vs. $182.04. I booked on Expedia. I check hotel prices regularly as they can change drastically within a few hours and there have been hotels where I thought that I wouldn’t be able to stay, but then suddenly there was a big price change and that’s when I jumped on it.

As for where to eat, since I usually stay in Rajadamri , I have absolutely no problem with food choices as I can either eat at any of the hotels in the area or easily walk up to Central World Mall where there are tons of choices of restaurants and eateries.

I can also walk to Chitlom skytrain area and go into Central Department store, at the skytrain elevated level, walk through it, and then, on the escalator, go up to two levels, I think it is. Then, walk through the back of that floor area and there’s a passage way that leads directly into Central Embassy Mall (now Ploenchit sky train area) and then one can go to EatThai where my Thai friends and I also go as they like to eat there and we’re usually not out looking for “quaint” Thai eateries as we’re just hungry and want to eat and the places where we go are usually crowded with other Thais who just want to eat. Sometimes we get snacks at food vendors on the street before we have our regular meal.

So, they always meet me wherever I’m staying in Rajadamri and we walk to either Central World, or walk or skytrain it to Siam Paragon, or walk to Chitlom or Ploenchit area. We have also eaten in the Saladang skytrain area. So, if you are really hungry and just want to eat, then you can head to a mall for a lot of choice.

http://www.bangkok.com/top10-shopping-malls.htm

From where I stay, I can walk to all of the above ones except three.

As for you mentioning that you will need to spend most of Saturday at JJ, then why stay in the river area and have more of a commute and fewer food choices? I’ll probably go up to JJ on the upcoming trip and will only need to go one stop to Siam and then change trains and go directly up to JJ.

Below is the Grand Central Point Serviced Apartments on Soi Mahatlek Luang 1 in Rajadamri. This is a great area. I stay on Soi Mahatlek Luang 2 and will be staying on Soi Mahatlek Luang 3. Soi Mahatlek Luang 1 is right in the heart of things. And with the Grand Central Point prices, if I were in your situation, I would just book an extra night and then check out early. I’ve done that before at a lot of hotels around the world if I had some really late flight out to my next destination and didn’t want to chance getting a late check out.

As you can see, the prices are $101 on Expedia, $113. on Booked, $101 on Travelocity, $101 on Orbitz, and $101 on Hotels/com

Out of curiosity, I was just looking at some hotels in Bangkok and the Dusit Thani is on sale for only $88. I love the Dust Thani and it's right at the Silom Skytrain Station. I recently stayed there, for one night, two trips in a row.

My Thai friend had e-mailed me, many months ago, as to the announcement of it going to close for major renovations, but I see that the start of the renovations has been rescheduled. I hope it doesn't lose its Thai charm and end up looking like a run-of-the-mill sleek hotel.

Accidental Texan: For food, you can check out Mark's Vlogs. I've been following his blogs for quite some time. I plan to try out Paste restaurant, The Local restaurant, and Baan Thai Family Recipes restaurant on the upcoming trip. I can easily walk to Paste and Baan Thai, and then when I have my stay at Emporium Suites (sukhumvit), I'll probably do Baan Thai Family Recipes as it's only one, skytrain stop away at Asoke BTS or who knows, is probably walkable as I have walked from the Emporium area to the Asoke area many times.

Mark lists a lot of different places to eat and in various price ranges. I get updates from him as I'm signed up and he also sends out information to those who are signed up to his Vlog, but that those who are not signed up can't access. I hope he continues his postings.

I have stayed at the Sheraton Grande which is right next to a station and the Westin is across the street. The Grande is ok although it does not have a club, just a happy hour.

@ Guenmai, thank you! I'll look into that. I need to thoroughly browse menus when I travel as i have an autoimmune disease that prevents me from eating gluten, dairy, soy & nightshades (tomatoes, potatoes etc) So that will be helpful!!

Besides the Grande Centre Point @ Terminal 21 Hotel there are some other hotels not far from the Terminal 21 Mall. If you are in that area take a stroll through that almost new mall where you will find a popular food court and several other restaurants.. This Asoke location has a stop for the Skytrain and the subway. (Other restaurants this area you will come across strolling around.)

SilQ Hotel is not too far from Terminal 21 Mall.

"..as a single female with seemingly horrible luck traveling in Asia, I'll pay for more luxury & security if necessary."

I don't know why you have such a problem with hotel selection. There are many solo women staying in hotels at half your budget price and below all the time. Some single women also choose Hostels like the Lub D group in Siam and Silom. As far as security goes a big problem for men or women is who they invite into their room ripping them off or worse. So be careful with who visits you. (I never leave computer or other valuables out in plain sight when out of the room. Valuables go in the safe. If my laptop is too big for the safe or safety box I will lock it in my bag.)

You can reach Chatuchak Weekend Market, MBK and other Siam area shopping using the Skytrain. Also the subway connects with the Airport Rail Link too.

Good luck.

You're welcome. And being one who has had food allergies, off and on, since a very small child, I also need to thoroughly browse menus to avoid my allergens of chocolate, corn, and dairy (except butter). Plus, I haven't eaten meat/poultry, by choice, for over 40 years, so I look for either vegan or fish menus.

AccidentalTexan: What's good about EatThai, and similar eateries, is that the way that it's set up, it makes it easier for those of us with either food allergies or food intolerances. Plus, there's a lot of choice.

Great, AccidentalTexan.

I figured that you'd get a really good price at the Dusit Thani. My best Thai friend, here at home, used to stay there regularly when she, American husband, and son would go to Bangkok, from L.A., to visit her family members. She was the one who, many years ago, told me that I should try it.

When I stayed there in Jan 2016, I had a rented condo in Rajadamri, but just left all of my stuff there and then packed an overnight bag and went to the Dusit Thani for one night to try it out and also to be close to Nahm Restaurant at the Metropolitan Hotel. Then, the next day, after trying out the buffet breakfast, I went back to my room, got my overnight bag, jumped on the skytrain, and headed back to my rented condo and was back in time for a late lunch at Biscotti. It's only one skytrain stop from Rajadamri to where the Dusit Thani is.

On that trip, I got the Dusit Thani for $87.** before the tax. With the tax, it was $102.** That was for a standard room. Then, in 2017, I got a room that was a higher grade, called The Dusit Room, and for $139. before the tax. It was very nice and spacious and with two TVs and a living room.

Enjoy the Dusit Thani as in April 2018 the big renovation will start. I'll drop by there on the upcoming trip, but to get one of their delicious blueberry muffins as there's a bakery inside of the hotel and they have the best blueberry muffins that I have ever had outside of here at home.

I think I posted that the Dusit Thani is right at Silom skytrain station. I meant to post that it's at Silom (MRT-subway) and Saladang (BTS-skytrain) in Silom area. Both the MRT and the BTS meet at that point. I just caught my typo.

Happy Travels!
