Bangkok - Great New for lovers of 5* bling

Unbelievable.....no doubt to be replaced with yet another high-rise, characterless heap of shiny concrete.....very sad!

I'm always sad to see a lovely teak house come down. And it sounds like it could be dismantled and moved, but the new owners plan to go the more profitable route and simply sell the wood for re-use. Very sad.

I thought Hemingways had closed last year. I think Carol had reported something about it. I guess she had reported that it was going to close.

I'm glad that I started going to Bangkok in the 90s before a lot of tear downs. I remember when I'd sit in my room, second floor, at the Siam Intercontinental Hotel (now Paragon Mall) and wave at the families living on the other side of the fence in wooden houses. The back of their wooden, two-story houses, faced my room and they'd go out and hang laundry on the line and wave at me. Those houses are long gone as are the beautiful peacocks that used to roam the land of the Siam Intercontinental Hotel. The hotel was replaced with the building of the "then" new Intercontinental Hotel, but on another piece of nearby land (near Chitlom). Guests cried when the Siam Intercontinental closed down.

My best, Thai friend just e-mailed me yesterday from Bangkok and mentioned that the Dusit Thani Hotel will close in June 2018 as it is consolidating with Dusit and Central and a huge renovation will start to have it go over to a modern style. That's really sad as it reminds me of the Siam Intercontinental Hotel in a way although the Siam Intercontinental Hotel had the most land of any hotel in Bangkok back in the day. I last stayed at the Siam Intercontinental a few months before its doors were closed and they started tearing it down . The sky train system was quite new during that time. I had also stayed there before the sky train system had been built. As for the Dusit Thani, I stayed there for one night in both Jan 2015 and Jan 2016.

Happy Travels!
