Bangkok- Dinner Cruises

I have been to Bangkok 5 times and am going again in January with daughter and husband- their first time.
I have never done the dinner river cruises as I has heard much negative reporting on them. However I would like all Fodorites to weigh in on the merits of these. Are any worth the money? Which ones have you guys found to be a good experience. I don't expect the food to be gourmet but a river cruise and ok food might be worth it. I would want pickup and drop off at our hotel. What to watch out for, as one cruise review had them waiting an hour before their boat arrived. I am guessing drinks are extra, what about tipping and the cruise photo which they all seem to provide- mandatory?
Thanks for your input.

I did a dinner cruise many years ago and was very disappointed with the food. A couple of years ago we stayed by the river and saw many half empty dinner cruises pass by. They didn't look enticing! I think the Oriental Hotel still runs one but it is likely to be very expensive.

Personally, I would hire a long tail from Saphin Taksin for a dusk cruise and then eat at a riverside restaurant.

in 20 trips to bkk I have never done a dinner cruise, although I have done a cocktail cruise from the anantara riverside hotel which was very relaxing.

My gut tells me that these cruises are not worth it as the food tends to be mediocre and there have been other complaints noted about some of them. We will skip this venue.
