My husband and I are living in Guangzhou, China. Our daughter is in New Delhi. We are meeting for the Christmas holidays and going to Angor Wat and Chiang Mai and Chang Rai with her. The cities in Thailand are essential as she did volunteer work there last summer in one of the orphanages which rescue children from the sex trade. She is going back to visit the children as well as show us the area. We must get her back to Thailand or end our trip in Thailand since her journey continues on after we return to China.
Our dates of travel are December 22nd to January 1.
Here are my questions:
1. Where is the best place to meet? We had talked about Bangkok as it was inexpensive for our daughter and David and I will need to return home and she will remain in Thailand. Plus while we do not need a visa for thailand we do need to show a ticket home. However, it is in the middle and does not quite make sense to me. Is this the best idea? If not, then where?
2. assuming we meet in BK, where do we go next. Is it better to go to East to Angor Wat and then to Chiang Mai? What is the best mode of travel? Or should we go to North Thailand first and then into Cambodia with a return to BK?
3.Suggestions on where to stay in each location. We do hostels and are not looking for a 5* hotel. We just need a clean place to sleep.
As always....thanks!

As your international flights will almost certainly be routed into BKK then it would make sense to meet there. Also, whilst there are direct flights from CM to Siem Reap, it may be cheaper to route through BKK and then to the north.Check out the Air Asia site as they are likely to be cheapest. You do need to book ASAP as Xmas is a very busy time and fares are only likely to rise from now. It is possible to go overland from BKK by train and bus. Train to Aranyabprahtet, cross the border to Poipet and get a bus or taxi from there to Siem Reap. The border crossing is "interesting " and you do need to keep your wits about you so as not to get recommend or pickpocketed. A fun trip, but probably better to fly if you can get a decent fare.
Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai is a 2 hour bus trip or you could rent a car which would give you a lot more flexibility to get around. Getting back to BKK can be done by plane or overnight train, probably for around the same cost.
www.hostelworld.com and www.hostelbookers.com are great sites for sourcing accommodation, the sites are easy to use and efficient. The reviews are usually very accurate and they book not only hostels (I.e. with dorms) but small hotels and B&B s as well. Last time we stayed in CM we booked 3 Sis B&B and enjoyed our stay there. Spacious rooms, helpful staff and a good location.
Actually, I don't think there are flights between CM and Siem Reap any more, and AirAsia still doesn't fly from Thailand to Siem Reap. The only option at the moment is Bangkok Airways.
My own preference would be to go to Angkor first, and then use the time in CM / CR to relax and unwind after that.
Don't worry about the onward ticket thing. They never ask to see that unless you're from a poor country.
We're headed there in 2 weeks, so this is interesting to read.
