Bangkok and Chiang Mai

Hello, I am going to Thailand in a couple of weeks and have a few questions...I'd really appreciate anyone's help.
How safe is the airport? My flight arrives very late at night and I can't see paying the high prices of an airport hotel for half a night. Second, does anyone have any thoughts about the Atlantic Hotel. Mainly, is the location convenient? It seems to me that it might be a bit out if one wants to sample the night life of Bangkok. Finally, what is an ample amount of time to spend in Chiang Mai?
Thanks a lot!

BKK airport is "safe" - I assume you have hotel reservations somewhere for that first night because you will probably be tired after a long trip. Others can advise you on the best way to get to that hotel and give their thoughts on the Atlantic - we used our hotel's car and driver. If you are not going on a hill tribe trek, you can easily cover the highlights of Chiang Mai in 2 days.

I think you need at least 3 days to see the things in and around Chiang Mai.

so you are saying that you plan to spend the rest of the nite in the airport??????????? for $30 or 40 you can get the comfort suites near to the airport...or less...look at www.huahin.20m.com or bkk airport hotels...

the airport is not all that comfortable quite honestly...it would be perfectly safe however...
like in any airport i would not suggest that you go to sleep and leave your belongings unattended beside you...not wise at any airport...

Thanks everyone for your advice about Thai. I will rethink my plan alittle. I was thinking about spending the night at the airport and then taking and early morning flight to Chiang Mai on Air Asia; perhaps it would be too much.
