Bangkok airport to Khao San Road?

Hi! We will be arriving at the Bangkok airport at about 11pm in a few weeks and I am wondering about the best way to get to our hotel, which is the Sam Sen Sam Hotel near Khao san road
48 soi samsen 3
samsen Rd. Banglumpoo

I just discovered that the airport express bus was discontinued. Is our best option a taxi then? How much should that cost and how long will it take? Thanks!

Take a taxi. If you could print out a map that clearly shows the cabbie where the hotel is, preferably with the hotel's phone number on it, that would help. Getting the address translated into Thai couldn't hurt, either.

I would allow 50 minutes, maybe an hour, door to door. And about 600 to 700 baht.

I'd take a taxi (make sure the driver uses the meter, but you are also responsible for the tolls, about 70 baht) but there is a train option now as well. If you do a search here I think there are a couple of reports from people who tried the train, or ask on Lonely Planet's thorntree.

To KSR, the "train option" would still require additional transportation, most likely resulting in comparable cost and time.

Train fare: "City Line’s fair [sic] start from 15 baht up to 45 baht, while Express’s fair is a flat rate of 150 baht."

See: http://airportraillink.railway.co.th/en/index.html

I said comparable, not the same.

Considering that a taxi, from door to door, would run under $15, why anyone would hassle other means is beyond me.

Some people travel on a budget....

Some people travel on a budget so they can travel longer....

Just because you can afford $15 for a taxi doesn't mean every other traveler to Bangkok can, or that one might not prefer to spend the money on a better meal.

And even if you add in a taxi from the last stop on City Link to KSR, you're probably talking half the cost, which is hardly "comparable".

I have tried just about evrey mode of transport from both airports over the years and I took the train (non express) from Sukumvit to the apt for teh first time in December. It was perfectly fine and quicker than a taxi into town but of course you will need to add on the time from the station to KSR. It will certainly be cheaper for one person but if there are two of you travelling then the it is less competitive (but still cheaper). We did get some hassle from the taxi driver who seemed to take exception to us using the train and tried to drop us quite a way from makkasan station but you won't get that on the way from the airport.

If you this is your first time in Bangkok then arriving after a long flight late at night, possibly jet-lagged, I would be inclined to get a taxi as it will take you door to door without the hassle of changing and is worth the few extra baht

I would just take the taxi, but only use the official counter outside the airport, where you line up and the people at the table assign you a taxi. Don't use any of the taxis that rely on touts inside the airport.

My estimate would be about 45 minutes to an hour, and about 400 baht, depending on traffic and if your taxi driver decides to take you on a roundabout way or not. In any case, since you're arriving late at night, jet lagged and in a place you don't know, I think it would be worth the few extra baht. Even if you are on a budget, Bangkok can be a confusing city and since you are flying you probably have enough money for a taxi, I'm guessing. And even if you did take a train, when you do have to hop into a taxi mid-town there is no guarantee that that taxi will not scam you and drive you in a circuitous (sp) route to get the fare up.

And Mr. Go's suggestion of getting the destination written in thai language (the sanskrit lettering) is a must. Have the hotel send it to you in an email and print it out before you go.
Have a good trip.

Thank you for all of the advice! We do have our hotel's address in Thai - do we need a map as well?

No, many taxi drivers can't read maps.

But it never hurts to have one. Even if the driver can't read it, you can.

One disadvantage of having a hotel in the Khao San Road area is that you have no close Skytrain stations. There are hotels in the Siam and Sukhumvit Road areas where you can use the Airport Rail Link to Phaya Thai for 45 baht (City Line) and then switch to the Skytrain to continue on to a hotel close to a Skytrain stop. Maybe check out some other locations near the rail service if you have time. If you are a kid and want to be around other kids you will like the KSR area.

There are even some cheap hotels near the Ratchaprorop Rail Link stop. This is the Pratunam area that many tourists who are into shopping head for.

No rail service from midnight to 6 a.m.

Link for Rail Service:
http://www.urbanrail.net/as/bang/bangkok.htm

Meter taxi sign up desks on first floor, out at the curb area. Two different locations, if one line is long use the other area. You do not pay for this taxi ride until you get to your hotel then look at the meter fare price and add the 50 baht surcharge. These meter taxis are registered so keep the receipt that identifies the vehicle. Have small bills to pay for taxi rides. A 500 baht note will be too big to change. Roughly from Suvarnabhumi to KSR figure on a total of 350 baht - plus or minus 50 baht. This includes the toll charges that you pay during the ride.

It is possible to take the Rail Link to Phaya Thai and from there a meter taxi to Khao San Road. When using a taxi in Bangkok ONLY use the meter. If you bargain the cost of a ride you pay more! Do not get in the taxi unless the driver agrees to use the meter. Have coins. I avoid parked taxis in the city. I prefer to wave a moving taxi over. Some parked taxis are waiting for some gullible fish to bargain the cost and pay more.

So, from the airport to Phaya Thai using the City Line is 45 baht each pax. From there to KSR probably under 100 baht. In a taxi you do not pay per passenger. What you see on the meter is for everyone! Meter starts at 35 baht - check it out!

But meter taxi is door to door direct from the airport. Same price for one passenger or for 4 passengers!
