Bali/Java - facials & shopping

We have finally narrowed our itinerary down and are waiting for confirmation from hotels.

My next questions is regarding facials (read lots of recommendations for massages) While in Ubud and Sanur can you recommend a place for an excellent facials. Also, I know I will find lots of shopping for art, clothing and jewelry but how about a really good qualilty clothing (women's) shops.

Thanks a bunch!
BTW, here is our final itinerary
Ubud - 2 days -with self
2 nights with husband
2 nights Tirtagangga
2 nights Sanur
5 nights - Java
last night in Jimbaran

I bought quite a few things from the Uluwatu store on Monkey Forest Road in Ubud -- they use hand made Balinese lace (chunkier than fine lace) -- clothes are white or black -- great camis, jackets, dresses, skirts, pants and they also have some really beautiful sarong length silk wraps.

You didn't ask about jewelry but two places I thought were outstanding were Treasures, right next to Ary's in Ubud for high end gold and stones, one of a kind pieces and in Celuk, the silver store Prapen -- modern (ala John Hardy designs without that mark up) to more traditional.
If you want to see textile art in Ubud, Threads of Life is a great stop as they have an amazing collection and knowledge about local area island weaving.
So looking forward to your trip report !!

Thanks jen,
Even before clothing I love textiles! And silver jewelry is my favorite. You read my mind.

I'm packed

impacked, I wouldn't say that Bali is known for "really good quality" women's clothing, but for casual beach-y wear I'm wild abut Biasa which is on the main drag between Kuta and Seminyak. There's a Paul Ropp just across the street that a lot of people like, though it's a bit too flamboyant for my taste.

In Central Java a good handicraft shop that's very close to Borobudur is called Mendut (same as the temple of that name). They have a wonderful collection of batik -- both pricy antiques and reasonable copies of old patterns and they support local glass painters.

Where did you find to stay in Tirtagangga? I've not been to that area for some time and I'm intrigued.

Marmot, Thank you for all your help and replies. The hotel looks great(don't you think so) although I am only going by the web site which I found by searching.

Facials and Spa anyone?

Animalia on the main drag in Kuta has interesting and reasonably priced clothes.

In Seminyak on the main market road my fav place for a massage is Jari menari - setting is magical and massages are great. IN UBud don't miss John Hardy jewelry - you can go to the fcatory and get stuff at an amazing discount if you call in advanace - www.johnhardy.com. Seminyak main road has some clothes shops and I also like Uluwatu lace for classic like white shirts.

There's a good review of your hotel (Tirta Ayu in Tirtagangga) on trip advisor -- only six rooms -- sounds special !!

Jen,
Thanks for the info - just confirms we made the right decision!
Hobbes,
Thanks for the Hardy website- I've seen his stuff in the department stores and now I know I will own some of it. I think it was BeCalms journal I read the prices are 40 to50% less than retail. But, is there negotiating?

Same question about John Hardy prices. But also would like to know if folks think that staying for lunch is worthwhile.

I went to John Hardy's factory with a die-hard fan who spent more money than you could possibly imagine. The prices were about 50% of what they would be at American retail and this made her so happy that she didn't even try to negotiate further.

When we made our reservation for the factory tour it wasn't made clear to us that lunch was part of the drill. They seemed quite miffed that we declined the invitation.

It looked nice -- a big table set under the banyan tree. If John and his wife are there, they officiate and guests are encouraged to stand up and say something from the heart. The whole experience is very New Age, but in a nice way.

Sounds like Marmot could have visited John Hardy's with my wife lol.

Yes we found lunch to be worthwhile. Lunch was very enjoyable with no business overtones. It is very social as the management team shares lunch with the shoppers and seems to enjoy doing so. We were asked to tell our name and where we were from. Our conversations with Cynthia Hardy and two of the managers provided their perspectives on Bali as Western expats which I particularly enjoyed as well as details of some of the commendable JH initiatives being implemented. Unfortunately John only stopped by for a few minutes as he was leaving for China. He's quite a character as well as a nice guy and I would have enjoyed spending more time with him.

As described above, a very long table sits in the shade of a group of Banyan trees. The food which is all grown organically on the property is served family style. There is quite a variety to choose from and is delicious.

Now to the subject of most interest, pricing. I honestly can no longer say what the current situation is. At the time of our visit, Sept '06, the entire extensive jewelry inventory with retail pricing was provided on the JH website. Since the items my wife wanted were not available in stores here at that time, we had no comparison to the pricing shown on the JH website and ultimately was not an issue. The prices we were given in Bali were significantly less than shown on the JH website. When we asked about a discount, the salesperson in Bali said that we had already received the discounted prices.

Last weekend, we noticed that one JH piece that we purchased in Bali is now stocked by a local jeweler in our town and the price curiously is the same price as we paid in Bali. Checking the JH website, the catalog of jewelry and prices are no longer provided on the site.

So to the question of are there discounts at JH in Bali to the current US retail prices, I'm really not sure. You could inquire about pricing/discounts when you email for an appointment to visit as well as availability of the complete line outside of Bali.

Thanks, that helps alot. I did find retail prices on many items on the Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus websites, so I will have the comparison prices. I'm surprised that the retail prices would be the same as in the states. If so, we won't be purchasing anything!
