Back in Bangkok

Eating breakfast on a garden patio with a cool breeze tickling my jetlagged face. Third cup of coffee is starting to pop my eyes open a bit. Sure great to be back and see things are back to normal.

Snagged an upgrade on Delta. Super service, great meals, good choice of wines and beer, and a comfortable seat that reclined into a bed. I skipped the meal on the Toyko to BKK leg and just crashed for 5 hours. Went out for a drink, and then had a massage in my room.

Landed at 2315, no lines at immigration, bag was second out of the chute. Took the AOT Limo for 1100 Baht and was at the Adelphi Grande on Soi 41 at 0010.

Pros: new hotel, clean, pleasant staff, rooms are good sized, comfortable queen bed. Plenty of hot water, large outdoor pool, well equipped gym. Breakfast room is very quiet with an outdoor garden patio.

Cons: Very quiet location, not at all like the active soi 8 location. However, they do have a shuttle to take you down to Sukumvit and they skytrain station.

Plan to work out, catch a swim, and them go to my favorite massage place on Soi 33. Two hours of sweet torture with a thai massage with me yelling 'Bow Bow!" to lessen the pain.

More to follow

Hello. How does it feel with the unrest in Bangkok? We are going for our first time around Christmas. Your writing is so casual one would never know there is a travel alert going on. If you could take a moment and give me your feelings regarding the City and how traveling there feels at this time. Thank you in advance. kg

The situation has been settled for some time, and most travel alerts have been lifted.

Except for a couple burned buildings, no one would know anything had happened.

Feels great. The city is calm and business seems back to normal. I think most of the travel alerts have been or will soon be lifted.

Saltwater pool was wonderful. Plenty long enough for laps and the warm was warm, but not too hot. Had the place all to myself. Only one in the gym as well. Nice mix of machines and free weights.

Going out now for a massage, some pool and beer or two. Not sure about dinner.

Wow - that four hands two hour oil massage was something quite special.

Carol - about a 7 minute walk to Skytrtain. They have a tut-tut which shuttles folks back and forth.

vinovino, have you had time yet to go see Maeng at the Pickled Liver on soi 11?

My dear friend in BKK, Dr Jack, says that things are just like normal where he is (around soi 1/2/3/4).

So, are there apartments at Adelphi Grande or is it strictly a hotel?

Carol - they have the same room types as the one on soi 8.

Where is Dr. Jack located? Doesn't he have a bar on soi 2?

Pickled Liver visit coming up.

Went to the Long Table, superb sunset and nightime city views. Go at happy 5-7pm for the best deal on drinks. Went a little over board on the 2 for 1 drinks. Group think took over so we ended up at Soi Cowboy for a few "special shows"

I'm glad you enjoyed the Long Table. Great place! Great view.

Dr Jack is usually at soi 4, across from the lobby of the Raja Hotel, at Annie's. But he goes to the Pickled Liver a lot as well. He enjoys Maeng's cooking, just like the rest of us do!

Don't forget to say hello to Maeng from me! She'll probably show you my picture(s) on the wall and on the computer. Also DH and DS.

Shot some pool on Soi 22 and then had dinner at Bourbon Street. Gumbo, cornbread, and pecan crusted catfish was all good. A little pricey, but I'd go again. Big rain storm cut the evening short.

What about Maeng's??? So you are also a pool shark. DS plays pool a lot. He's at a big tournament in Vegas right now. His team made it to the 'money' but not a lot of it before they got knocked out of the running.

What's the pool hall on soi 22? Just curious. DS and DH have probably played there.

Hmmm... pool player, BKK 'frequent' visitor, stays(ed) at Adelphi, will say hi to Maeng... causes 'trouble' in the lounge.... maybe you ARE Degas.

Carol, we were headed to the Piclked Liver, but the skies really opened up. You most likely know how it can come down like cats and dogs in BKK.

RE: Bourbon Street. The service was good and they even sold us a bottle of hot sauce when my GF suddenly got a craving for some to take home. I was surrized to see so many folks there.

There is a cluster of little bars on Soi 22 just down from the Queens Park hotel. Lots of the girls working in them are "sharks" in every sense of the word.

I used to play a game called 'Killer' with some of the pool shark girls. We always had a good time. I always lost!! I'm not a good pool player by anyone's standards. I have my own cheap cue, and I've ordered my own Southwest (to be ready in about 8 yrs) but that doesn't mean I'm any good at the game! I do enjoy watching though.

Carol, I'm not a great pool player, but like to play for fun. Watching is fun, especially when some of the sharks spring into action. Big talk farangs get real meek when they get trashed by the little gals in the tight jeans and spiked heels.

AskOKsena, no, not Thursday night.

Switched hotels on Sat, moving to the Sheraton Grande. I am using points and cash, but they were nice enough to upgrade me for free to a grande deluxe high floor room with free butler service, internet, evening drinks a the Living Room and breakfast. Brand loyalty pays off

Late breakfast, followed by a two hair thai massage, then being roped into going to a chick flick (Sex and the City) a late afternoon swim, followed by some free drinks at the hotel, then a quick taxi ride Soi 33 for dinner at Basilico Italian Restaurant, some pool and watching Coyote dancers at Mojo's followed by a few gin and tonics at Climax Disco.

Now you are closer to soi 11... say hi to Maeng.

Darn the luck! My flight was cancelled and I had to spend one more night in Bangkok!

Got all the way to the aiport before getting the news. Sheraton
put us back on the same floor with upgraded benefits.

Went to the Pickled Liver on Soi 11. Had a nice chat with Maeng who is a very lovely lady. We played pool, had a few beers and ate some of Maeng's famous garlic shrimp along with some soup and a chicken dish. Everything tasted great and the price was very reaonable. Plan to go again on future trips.

Big rain storm this morning.

vinovino,
I'm so glad you went to visit Maeng. Yes, she's a lovely lady. I hope you enjoyed your food. I think you must have, since you are going to go back sometime.

Darn... having to spend an extra night in BKK!! (lol)

Carol, we had a good time there. Very pleasant atmosphere and the food was great. Seemed like the place was filled with regular customers who felt "at home" there.
