Around Bali - 1 week by car

Dear Fodors!!

Is easy travel around Bali island by car with a local driver?

i just check that distancies aren´t so big from north to south in the island.
i wont wanna stay in 1 base place like Ubud and make day tours.

Some advice?

Many thanks.

We had a car the last time we were there for a week. It did allow flexibility and for us to get to places off the beaten path. Having said that , my husband , who did the driving said it was not easy. Other than the obvious bikes and motor scooters, the ditches along side the narrow roads made for some harrowing driving (and he has driven all over the world).

Distances are not far. The North shore was much more enjoyable as it is less populated. Get a good map and enjoy. You will get lost a few times as some of the maps are not real accurate.

I would get a driver, When I have stayed at the Ubud Bungalows on Monkey Forest Road the owner Wayan has gotten me a driver to head up to the north shore. He has several drivers that he can recommend.

You can drive over the mountains in the middle of the island and they are beautiful or you can go alond the circumference of the island and stop off and numerous places of interest.

Enjoy.

Dear Fodorite
I will recommend you to book a private car with driver as that is the best way to commute in Bali. I went last year (2012) in Feb. Here are the costing: Half day tour with driver costed us USD 35 (5 hours max). A full day tour costed us USD 41 (10 hours max). Pick up from airport to hotel (Kuta Area) costed us 12 USD one way. I booked the tour and car through a local agent. You can check my blog for the remaining information.
