Alpina Hotel-Phuket

We're looking at this hotel in Kata Beach. Can anyone tell me anything about it? Thanks.

All I know is that it's one of the new places, it' 0.7 km ( about half mile ) inland so might be hilly area, you know the area so if you visualise that far back from the beach it could be quite a way.

It says it's set up on the hillside, and that there is a shuttle that will drive you to the beach. If being near the beach is important, this might not suit you. Looks nice enough though.

Andy, did you look at the Kata beach Resort itself, it's I would say only 3 star, but seaview room and you are right on the beach, that area though when I visited a few months back has become very much busier than it ever was before.
The central Kata Resort ( used to be Jiva resort ) is walkable to the beach, there are a lot of places behind the Club Med area alsong there.
You have to be careful of hill places like the Andaman Cannacia, couple of beers inside you and that hill looks like a rock face! It is steep !
So you need to watch these places as land is almost impossible to find so many new places are not that convenient.
Although not 'Kata' and across the road from the beach the 'Moevenpick' at Karon might be worth a look, it's between 'Old Phuket' and the Karon Circle.

Thanks. JamesA, we saw the Movenpick when we stayed at the OPH last year. We thought we would try Kata beach for a small change. Being on the beach is a plus. Any other suggestions for a Kata hotel on the beach?

Though not on the beach, Sawasdee Village looks to be lovely. I had nice correspondence with them earlier this year.

Kim, you are right, it's nice, the only downer though is that it is one of those on the busy soi heading back from the road running behind Club Med heading up to the Karon-Rawai/Chalong Road, it's a bit of a haven amidst a very crowded area.
On Kata itself it's the Kata Thani, we have been through the M/Tri scenario !
The kata beach Resort Hotel is 'right on the beach', they got the prime position there ayears back.
Along side they were building when I was down there, if you get a seaview it's ok but a lot are down the side ( awfull color building ), it is very much a package holiday hotel though. The cafes and restaurant nearby now promote Burger and Fries B99, it has changed a lot even in say 1 year.
This is often 'tougher' than it seems trying to find a reasonable beach place, there are others further down Nai Harn Way or heading north of Patong, like Surin Beach, even Kamala which is nearer was packed in high season with lots of family vacationers filing the beach ( nothing against or wrong, just an observation ).
The central Kata resort is nearer to the beach than a lot of others, pricewise it's good, deluxe about $110.

Just across the road from the beach ( as you leave you head past the Karon Beach Resort ) is Sugar Palm, that's a Pool Access $95 sort of range.
A lot of the places 'nearer' are catering to the mass market, the only land left for newer places is further from the beach.

Andy - do you have any useable 'points' like Hilton ( normaly I would never suggest it at all, but when you think $167 for seaview compared with what others charge suddenly it's not so bad, though of course drink prices etc inside would be high, but if you have points you can use with Hilton it might at least edge it's way into the Top 10 possibles, I don't mind suggesting as you know the area, Meridien and OPH experienced, so you can judget yourself ).

Picture the road rising up the hill from Karon to Patong, at the peak is the Central karon Village perched on the cliffside, getting to/from this place means tuk tuk, absolutely no other choice, the only 'plus' though si there is a hilly walkway down to the beach, and this is very far north end of Karon, seaview $170-180 range, it losses out on it's lanside position but gets plus points for at least access to the beach and amazing views ( if you can picture it ), the big downer is access to the place.

$110 for Central Kata comes out as quite a good deal, sawasdee much nicer in design, layout, very Thai, just that extra distance to the beach.

Central Village Karon reviews;
http://www.res24.com/review/posts.ht...ury-hotels.com , make that $175 range for ocean facing, 150 normal, where the walkway meets the beach a local entrepreneur has set up ( been there years ) a place to eat, get drinks and loungers on the beach, as it's the very far far end of Karon not so busy, I used to wander there a lot in quieter days and really nice as the rocks and trees handg over that part of beach making it one of the nicest 'tropical feel' places along that area of coast.

So thinking about it, it's a plus, pixture the location as you go up the hill out of Karon heading towards le med and Patong, ait's on that hillside, lots of trees and bamboo shoorts available, if you can live with negotiating the tuk tuks to and from it would well be worth a serious look, very different from being in the Sawasdee/central Kata/kata beach resort area which is far busier.

Note Central Karon 'Village' is Karon North hillside, Central 'Kata Resort' is busy Kata area near the kata beach resort behind Club Med.
Both are on that map so you can get the picture.

Kata Thani is on a quieter beautiful stretch of beach (Kata Noi). I've got photos on my web site (cjscollection) if you select the photo gallery, and then pick out the Asia album, you'll see just how gorgeous this place is. The pics are near to the end of the Asia album.
