Airfare to Bangkok from So. Calif or Seattle
I'm looking for a good fare from San Diego to Bangkok and back or from Seattle to Bangkok and back in March or April. I'm finding airfare online for close to 1000.00 including taxes (ouch!). Are there any sights or secrets to finding a good fare?

I fly EVA, they have great service and their fares are very competative. You will have to leave out of LAX, they don't fly directly from San Diego. They fly LAX-TPE TPE to BKK, usual fare is from around 700 - to just over 900 USD. Also for just a little bit more United flies non-stop from SFO-BKK, for just over 1,000 USD. Cathay Paciffic for about the same price. I have found that from the West Coast EVA is about the cheapest.
If your leaving from a smaller regional city like SD that doesn't really have a large international gateway, and you have to connect in places like LAX, SFO, or SeaTac, I have generally been able to lower my fares by a couple of hundred dollars just by purchasing my connecting ticket seperatly with a local regional carrier. You have to do all the re-baggae checks and stuff, but I usually do find that I save money by doing this. Becuase I can find the lowest fare, the other way its based on the higest average going rate for a ticket in that market at that time. Which sometimes can be 100 to 300 dollars higher than if you find your own connecting ticket.

United does not fly nonstop from SFO to BKK. There would be a stop or connection in Tokyo.
itasoftware.com shows fares for SAN-BKK at around $860, all in for that time. I would wait until January.
Definitely: look for fares for travel on Monday thru Thursdays.

United flight 837 is truly a direct flight. It is not a nonstop. It originates at IAD, stops at SFO (probably change planes), stops at NRT with a change of planes, and continues to Bangkok. It's all under the same flight number.
When I checked itasoftware, they showed the trip from SAN as having an AA flight to LAX connecting to EVA and going vie Taipei to BKK. I doubt that you would find much better by booking the SAN-LAX trip separately.

You also should try some consolidators-look in the travel section of your newspaper or google. You might also try ethnic travel agencies. For a trip this summer to BKK I went to a travel agent in the nearby Asian shopping center. He got us on ANA with a stop in Tokyo to see a friend for less than the published fare by about $400. He also had very good deals on Cathy Pacific but not on the dates we needed to go.
