Airfare from Bali to Ko Samui
Trying to play around with different options to find lowest airfare. Need to get from DPS to USM (Ko Samui). (Already have a transpacific flight from Bangkok (BKK) to the US that I cannot change.)
Wanted to see Ko Samui in addition to spending a few days in Bangkok. So, fly from Bali to Ko Samui (via Bangkok or Phuket or Kuala Lumpur) and spend 5 days. Then, spend last few days of trip in Bangkok since flight leaves from there?

Bangkok Airways flies from Singapore to Samui. Not cheap though.
Air Asia flies to Krabi from KL. from there you can bus and ferry it.
Bangkok Airways owns the Samui airport which means high prices and lack of competition. The only other company that flies there is Thai also expensive due to fees paid to BA.
If money is a concern I would recommend just doing Krabi. More day tours and cheaper than Samui. Excellent kayaking and snorkelling tours from Krabi.
AA and Nok Air fly Krabi to Bkk.

I would go through Bangkok and get a return ticket from BKK - USM - BKK. Flying from DPS will take you around 4 hours to BKK and slightly shorter flight times to either Phuket or KL. I prefer BKK airport as there are more flights to USM.

You can fly Air Asia cheaply from DPS to Bangkok, then fly Bangkok Air from there to Ko Samui.
What time of year is this trip? That makes a differences in terms of weather and whether you want to be on the Gulf of Thailand side (Ko Samui) or the Andaman Sea side (Phuket, Krabi, Ko Lak, Ko Lanta).
And I always recommend time in Bangkok!

Note AA and Bangkok air use different airports in Bangkok.
You would need to allow a few hrs to cover transport and check in if u did that option.
If you want beach time in Thailand another option is koh samet which is fairly close to bangkok. That would save you money on flights.

Thanks for the advice everyone. The trip is in August. Yikes! Unlike me to leave the details to the last minute. Since it's in August, I chose Gulf of Thailand area. Also, my adult kids and I enjoy diving/snorkeling. Still don't have reservations in Ko Samui and am open to Ko Tao or Ko Pha Ngan. (Full moon is on Aug. 10 so that may affect availability.)
Yes, I noticed that Air Asia flies to different airports. I think the best option would be to fly to DPS and then purchase a RT ticket BKK-USM. I'm in the process of pricing out the different flights.
Yes, I am allowing some time in Bangkok and would also like to to a day trip to either Ayuthaya or Kanchanaburi. Open to advice or opinions on which day trip to choose. (I will be traveling with my adult kids 18 & 22)
Again, thanks for the advice from the veteran travelers. I love this forum.
