Advice/Tips on Kuala Lumpur & Langkawi
Hi everyone,
I have posted many times on the Europe boards for my trips and always receive lots of help, so when I heard that my father and his girlfriend would be off to Malaysia in March, I thought I would try to get some tips/advice for them.
I don't know much about either place. I think they will be staying at the Sheraton in Langkawi, but I am not sure about KL.
If you have any suggestions in terms of must-sees, dining, nightlife, nice beaches, trendy spots etc I would really appreciate it. It is their first trip so I thought it would be nice to try and help them with some details.
Thanks!!
Layla

Sorry I am in a bit of a rush this morning, first point though that you can get working on is that there are '2' Sheratons on Langkawi !
One is in Kuah Town area and the other at the beach on west coast, although people will give the merits for each one I would hope others would agree that for a beach holiday be
'sure' they have booked the "Sheraton Beach Resort" and not the one in Kuah

langkawi is fairly quiet but one of the great things is that it is perfect place for car renytal as a means to get around, traffic is easy and pleasant to drive.
There are not a lot of restaurants and evenings are quiet but there are a few more lively places near the beaches. It's not really a trendy spot but is developing fast recently.

I totally agree with JamesA - rent a car in Langkawi. The traffic is light and the driving is easy. The driving is on the left (not a problem for we English!). There are a number of nice restaurants outsie of the hotels which make a change from the hotel food. Also, the night market in Kuah is a worth a visit. Not as big as markets elswhere, but some great foodstalls.
Hotels in KL are really cheap by comparison with most cities so I feel it is worth splashing out on something special. The Executive floors in the Mnadaring Oriental are worth a look. It is right next to the Petronas Towers. Chinatown is interseting as is the entral market. The Railway Station is worth and hour to view the colonial style architecture.

The Oriental in KL is nice but we really thought the Sheraton-Luxury Collection, not regular Sheraton, was first rate in rooms-large and very well decorated, service and a decent in-town location. Last May we paid $175 with tax for a Deluxe Room on one of the Club Floors through Asiahotels.com.The only hotel in KL that was a disappointment was the Ritz Carlton.

We had a wonderful stay at the Ritz Carlton in KL. All the rooms have butler service and Club access. I was not impressed with the JW Marriott next door, and I found the Shangri-La too huge and glitzy. But we all like different things.

It must be about 4 or 5 years since Bob and I exchanged opinions on the Langkawi Sheraton's the first time !!
Kuah Town was a dissapointment for shopping as I found out from the first time there so didn't bother on later trips, promoted for Duty Free status I thought it would be a bargain for electronics but most of the duty free places had household goods and food, wines were cheap though.
The coast south of the Sheraton Beach along and then past the airport are nice, then down to pelangi and Frangipani area.
Lovely scenic island and driving around is a relaxed joy. There are a few beach bars with muci, places for a drink and watch the sunset, but as far as nightlife goes it really is maybe a band in a hotel and that's it.
KL nightlife is far more lively and a good range of bars, music across all ranges.
