7 days in Thailand-help!

My first post here, but I've enjoyed the expertise immensely over the past few months as I have used Fodors members' advice for Hong Kong, Sing, and Korea. I live in Tokyo so if you need any advice on my town...you got it. OK...my query: 7 days in Thailand. Want to get a mix of Bangkok, visit one of the world heritige sites (Ayuthaya or Sukhotai??), and then spend a few days beaching it in Krabi (where I want to do some rock-climbing). My real questions: which heritige site is better (given the time constaints) and where in Krabi? I'd originally wanted to also go to the 4 Season Chiang Mai but think that's toooo ambitous in this timeframe. Your expert advice / 7 day itinerary would be warmly appreciated. ;-)

yes you are right...save chiang mai for another trip...also given your time constraints you might want to pick Ayuthaya as it is so close to bkk...others can give you better answers perhaps, but that is my initial feeling...
climbing i cannot help you with...and james will advise you about the weather probably
enjoy your stay....stay near the river in bkk for the best tourist experience...

You're right, your time constraints do dictate where you can go. If you want a combination of city, heritage site and beach, I think your options are pretty much restricted to visiting Bangkok and doing a day trip to Ayutthaya, plus a few days at the beach. Since you are in Tokyo, you can get to Thailand with some frequency, so you can also choose one place now, another place for the next trip.

Thanks rhkkmk and Kathie- Since posting, and seeing your suggestions, I've gone ahead and put together a proposed itinerary: any thoughts?
2 days Bangkok (staying with a friend w big place)
1 day trip to Ayuthaya
4 days Krabi
BTW- while in Krabi and following James's many posts of great advice, I've won approval from my girlfriend for staying at Tubkaak Resort - nice special deal on for off-season 7,500 Baht for sea view room....we were alwasy planning on spoiling ourselves in Krabi so hopefully this will be the place. It doesnt seem like ANYONE except for James has any first hand experience with this place. Anyone?
Thanks again.
