3 days in Lahore, need some suggestions

I read a lot of posts and searched a lot, but have some specific questions.

We are planning a short sojourn to Pakistan during early Jan, but we have got only 3 days. Our current plan is go directly to Lahore and spend 2 days there, leave to Amritsar the 4th day morning and visit some good places. would love to do all the activites like kite flying. Here are some questions lingering in my mind

1. We are contemplating btwn leaving from Lahore on 4th day night or 5th day morning to India. What is the typical check-in , check-out times from Lahore ?

2. Is kite flying festival around those dates .

3.We would like to visit only the grand and stunning place in and around Lahore due to the limited time in hand. Any recommendations ?

4. Is Jan a good month. Should I book the hotels well in advance ? Any good reference site or information is appreciated

Thanks a lot for any help !

2. I've not been to Lahore during the kite festival and in various years it has been banned but I believe it is held in conjunction with the festival of Basant....which is kind of a left-over from the times when Hindus still lived in the Lahore (before partition). I believe it will be held on the 20th of January this year.

4. I've not been to Lahore since 2007 but there is very little tourism there these days. I would think that hotels would be begging for customers and you should be able to negotiate a bit....depending on the quality of the hotel you are seeking. I cannot comment of the weather in January as I've only been there in June or September/October. I would expect it to be a bit on the chilly side. It is a great place to buy a leather coat!

1. The check in time at the airport are pretty standard. They have a nice airport in Lahore....quite new and fairly empty on the times I've used it. Crossing to India will likely be a bit tedious though I've only crossed from India into Pakistan at Wagah. You will need some cash for the porters. One set will carry you bags to the border and pass them on to a set of Indian porters. If possible have some Indian rupees available. I tedious part for me was not on the Pakistani side....but the Indian side that was not particularly computerized in 2004.

3. The grandest tour site will be a combined tour of the large fort and Badshahi Mosque that are adjacent to one another. A tour book will give you an idea of what is available. The Lahore Museum is pretty run down and takes only an hour or two to visit. If you are a big fan of Kipling you will find the cannon he mentions in "Kim" right in front of the building....but watch your step...the traffic passes on either side of "Zamzama." There is also a very old and poorly maintained zoo. You will likely be the biggest exhibit and everyone will want your picture! One great thing to experience....the food! Likely the best in all of Pakistan. If you wanted to travel out of Lahore you might consider a drive up to the Salt Range. We visited a salt mine in 2007 that is not far off of the new highway to Pindi. It dates back to the time of Alexander the Great. One last thing....I've found Lahore to be a poor place to purchase gifts. Pakistan has some great crafts-people but little of it seems to be for sale in Lahore....we found greater success in places like Gilgit. However there is one exception.....abstract art. There are a number of art galleries in Lahore and there are some great prices on original painting. I made a purchase of one of my favorite pieces at the Ejaz gallery but there are others as well.
