I consider the Grand Palace/Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Wat Po (Reclining Buddha), and Wat Arun the must-see wats. If you are really interested in Buddhism, there are dozens more I can recommend. This group of wats and the Grand Palace are all in the same are - you can take a water taxi to them, then just a foot ferry across the river to Wat Arun. I also consider the Jim Thompson House a must-see. If you re interested in SE Asia arts, the Prasart Museum is wonderful (note that you must make reservations in advance and you'll need a taxi that can find it). I always recommend that first-timers stay along the river. There are so many great Thai food places, I'm not sure where to start. If you are really a foodie, you might enjoy one or more of the Bangkok food tours. These are walking tours and have been well-reviewed here.
Are you planning on spending all of your time in Bangkok or do you plan to go to a beach or to the north? The concierge at your hotel can get you Muay Thai tickets.

two of our favorite thai food restaurants are Tongue Thai, located between the Oriental Hotel and New Road and Harmonique, just off New Rd--closed on sundays.
many bkk hotels have fabulous sunday brunches, esp the 5* hotels: four seasons, jw Marriott, kepinski (sp) and others
gaggan is a unique restaurant

I don't want to spend the whole two weeks in Bangkok is it will far too hectic for me. Can someone recommend where to go for a more relaxed pace of living? Maybe somewhere with beaches

In November, the beaches on the Andaman Sea will have good weather - that means not just Phuket, but also Krabi, Ko Lak, etc. You will likely decide based on the hotel where you want to stay. Everyone knows Phuket, and there are still some very nice places there, but some areas, especially Patong are sleazy. Check the usual websites - agoda, hotels.com - for hotel deals. Also think about what you want from your beach stay. Do you like an active beach with lots of bars and restaurants, vendors, etc or do you want a quiet place? Do you want resort that you never have to leave or a place where you can easily get to other nearby places?

I would spend no more than 3-4 nights in Bangkok plus maybe one more before your flight home. There are lots of relaxing beaches yo choose from whether on the mainland or one of the Islands. They can be as busy or relaxing as you want. The Andaman Coast will have the beast weather in Nov.
Lots of detail info to be found here http://www.travelfish.org/country/thailand. Krabi is nice and will have a lot of activities to choose from. Khao Lak maybe and lots or get away from it all pick one of the islands ( not Phukek).
Khao Sok national park is worth a few days for a change of pace.

I'd want a quieter beach atmosphere, but still with stuff to do around apart from just drinking. I am going with a long term girlfriend so I wont be chasing tail.
Thanks for the input everyone. Much appreciated!

If you should choose Phuket, take a look at Kata beach area rather than Patong. Plenty to do outside the resort. Katathani resort on the smaller but very nice Kata Noi beach would be a good choice as well. Quieter, but a short walk or taxi to activity, shopping, dining.
Enjoy your trip! I could also spend the full two weeks in Bangkok, but a beach side trip is a great idea, especially since you are visiting Thailand during some of the best weather.

Blimey, you're hitting the road running. I admire your energy after spending 2 weeks legging it round Europe...

I'd have spent a lot of the travelling time with my head in a good travel guide.

The reason why Im in Thailand now is because of the crazy flight connection deal I got, normally I wouldnt do this and yes Im tired and jet lagged at times, but I can sleep when I'm old. Other suggestions are greatly appreciated!
