trip report to tajmahal agra india

It has been years since I was last in Jakarta. But my best shopping memory is the Pasaraya Department Store, which has two huge floors of beautiful batik and crafts from all over Indonesia. Some of the things I purchased there turned out to be musuem-quality textiles. There are ready made clothes and I believe they do some custom-made clothing. The crafts are beautiful and very reasonably priced.
Pasaraya is my favorite too for Indonesian handicrafts and batik. It's a full department store and also has contemporary reasonably priced apparel. There are several big malls quite close to the Mulia: Senayan, Grand Indonesia, Plaza Indonesia which have international brands -- from Prada to Zara and local clothing specialty stores
For serious bargain shopping you have to go to Mangga Dua which is about an hour's drive from Central Jakarta.
This blog will give you an idea of what to expect:

Re your other post about street markets: Yes and no. They tend to be local neighborhood events. Mangga Dua is in the same spirit, just enclosed and vertical.
Alun Alun is the nicest place to shop for high end batik and crafts. It is in the Grand Indonesia Mall. It's a really lovely store, with everything beautifully displayed - but not cheap. Pasaryaya is great - 2 huge floors full of everything.
You can also try Surabaya Street for 'antiques' - fun to browse. Be sure to bargain.
