1st time to Southeast Asian January 14 to 31
Anyone been to the Ayana resort in Bali ? Know of any feedback on cruising from Bali to Singapore on Crystal Symphony cruise line? We are travelling with 3 other couples from Bali to Singapore through Malaysia and Thailand. My friends are concerned about the weather and the flights particularly in January. Our flight leaves on the 14th from NYC through Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific and on to Bali.
We are in our forties and experienced travellers. We are major foodies who also like to shop!
Any and all feedback is appreciated!

If you are interested in experiencing SE Asia, forget the cruise. You will get a glimpse of the ports - that's all. If you want to cruise in a tropical clime, you'll get that.
I don't know the Ayana, but I can think of few places that have so many wonderful hotels as Bali. You are spoiled for choice.
If you are foodies, Singapore will be a highlight. You might also consider Georgetown, Penang in Malaysia - wonderful hawker food there. And of course, Thailand has fabulous food. Do spend some time in Bangkok.
The only weather-related problems you may have with your flights would be on the ground in NYC.

I've visited the Ayana many times but I've never stayed there. The Ayana is a large, self contained resort situated on cliffs overlooking the sea. There are multiple pools, multiple restaurants, a very good spa, many activities and spectacular ocean views. You can also use the facilities at their sister resort, the Rimba. The beach is a pretty sandy cove, but to get to it you have to walk down -- and eventually up -- about 200 steps. The Rock Bar is insanely popular with waits up to two hours for the hoi polloi to get in. (Guests have priority.) Accommodation ranges from very luxurious villas to more ordinary regular rooms.
You will most likely get rain and/or stormy weather in January, but if luck is with you you may get a few sunny days too. There are good restaurants all over Bali, but with a few exceptions most are concentrated in the Petitenget area of North Seminyak, about 45 minutes drive from the Ayana. I'd recommend Sardine, Sarong, Metis, Bambu. I also like La Lucciola more for ambience than food. It's right on Petitenget beach, which is a very nice place to start for a beach walk.
If you can, plan to spend some time in the Ubud area, for nature and culture. Locavore is a wonderful restaurant in the center of town. At all of the above reservations are necessary.
For shopping, Ubud is the place for arts and crafts, Seminyak/Petitenget for beach fashion.
