10 hour layover in Tokyo Narita Airport

So on the way to San Diego in July me and a friend will be having a stopover in Tokyo Narita Airport - it's on a Tuesday arriving at 7.05am in the morning and flying off at 5.25pm that same afternoon.

Is it possible to go into Tokyo in that 10hr layover? I know that it will be at least 3hrs getting in and out of immigration either way which cuts down time to 7hrs. Then take into account travelling to and from Tokyo another 2hrs so cuts down to 5hrs in Tokyo itself. I know it's tight but I've never been to Japan so I would love to go and just get a glimpse of it.

If it's possible what would you recommend to do in those 5hrs - I love sightseeing just famous sights and possibly some good food wouldn't go awry.

If it's not possible then I'm happy to just do somewhere close by - any suggestions on what I could possibly do otherwise?

Thanks in advance for any information you can give me

You have plenty of time.Immigration and customs never takes more than an hour, and the Keisei Skyliner train takes about 40 minute to go from the airport to the Nippori or Ueno areas, both of which have plenty of interesting places to visit. Also, here are some previous topics that may be useful:

I would go into the town of Narita itself. It is surprisingly interesting for an airport town. Do not miss the temples (forget the name off-hand but easy to find). There are lots of good places to eat as well.

I had a great time with Narita Rainbow Tours:

Naritasan ( http://www.naritasan.or.jp/english/ ) is the major temple in Narita, the fire ceremony is a must if you go. However I would not have enjoyed it nearly as much without Mr. Katsumi from Rainbow Tours, because I wouldn't have been able to figure out how to get through the front door, much less understand the ceremony.

Thanks for your replies and for the links to the previous topics

We are definitely going to head into Tokyo since it seems easily doable.

I can't wait!
