I would like to go somewhere interesting and exotic out of NYC for our honeymoon - but with only 9-10 days. I am thinking Thailand/Cambodia -- but think I am trying to do to much but do not want to waste long trip to SE Asia. We were thinking after arriving 2 days Bangkok, 2 days Siem Reap and 2 days Phuket before returning to NYC. Would this 2 too exhaustive. We are very interested in Siem Reap.
For end October, which beach area/island would be best to avoid rain. Where in Phuket would you stay for honeymoon that is not too far from airport - our travel agent suggested Ananmari. Which Bangkok hotel most central and elegant. What about in Siem Reap..
If you think this is too exhaustive -- any other exotic/interesting suggestions. I want somewhere reasonably warm -- but think the Caribbean (aruba probably best at that time of year), Hawaii (already been there), not that interesting. Considered Fiji, Tahiti -- ready cyclone risk then and could be rainy. Maldives and Seychelles are also possibilities. What about Goa, India?

hi- I haven't been to asia yet, but I am in the midst of planning my honeymoon over there during the xmas holidays. We are also leaving from new york city. What I have found is that 2 days in any place, after such a long journey, is not going to be relaxing, and that IMO, you would be better off dividing the trip into two places, 4 days each. We are fortunate to have 3 weeks, so we are doing a lot of hopping around, but have alotted at least 3 day min to most places (unless we are just using the place as a stopover to the next). Maybe 4 days Bangkok, 4 days Beach? I don't know enough about Bangkok to say that I would want to spend 4 days there, but a lot of people on this board say there is at least a weeks worth of sights.
We looked into Goa and the seychelles also. Both look beautiful, particularly the Seychelles. I scratched the Maldives because lots of people say it is a ROYAL pain in the butt to get to and not that much more unique than many other places that take half the time to get there. There is a potential boredom factor apparently since you are basically at a resort which is an island, so unless you like that kind of thing, you could get antsy.
Anyway, just regurgitating some things I had heard since I considered the same options. Not to throw a wrench in, but what about Brazil? You can get some city life, lots of beach time and don't have to fly halfway around the world with only 9 days to spend. Or argentina- somewhere in south america?
9-10 days including travel days from NYC is 7-8 days on the ground. Really, you are looking at a maximum of two stops. I love SE Asia, and I've taken week long trips there before, but always to just one location. I hate to discourage you from going, but it is worth considering a closer honeymoon location. Or, if you can add even a couple of days it will help. You will be making a day for night time change to SE Asia, which further reduces how much you can do. Also, October is the month when there are monsoons on both sides of Thailand, so you will have to be lucky to get dry weather at the beach.
Thailand is magical. Kathie is accurate that a 9 day trip is 7 days on the ground. If you decide to go, two locations should be the maximum. I would spend 4 days in Bangkok and 3 days in Siem Reap. This be a whirwind trip, but I think it would be worth it.
Note, October is an iffy month for weather on the Thailand beaches. The rainy season shifts from West to East during that month and good weather is just a guess.
I do think a trip to Thailand would be much more interesting than a trip to the Caribbean. If you're like many of us, you'll be back soon.
We went to Thailand and Cambodia for our honeymoon back in 2003. My favorite spots were Koh Samui and Siem Reap. Maybe I didn't do enough research on Bangkok, but other than the awesome hotel we found it overwhelming, hot, and not so interesting. Angkor Wat was amazing. We were there for 3 full days I think. I am so glad we did that. Koh Samui was beautiful. We were up North too, and enjoyed a trek. We were there in May during the SARS outbreak and almost everywhere (not Bangkok) was very quiet as a result. Good luck with whatever you decide.
Thanks for the responses -- decided on Hawaii -- closer to home and can go lots of snorkelling and relaxing, which we will need after the wedding, which we planned in 4 months. We will save Thailand for a time when we have 2-3 weeks off.
It sounds like a good decision. When you are ready to plan your Thailand trip, we're here to help!
personally i would stay at the beach and in bkk only..
in phuket you might look at the JW marriott and in bkk the peninsula
Bob, you seem to have missed that the OP has decided to go to Hawaii with the limited time they have.
We do not have the space to enumerate those things that Bob has missed. For example, the dawn of a new century.
