Your Thoughts about AA Plat Challenge?

Jump to last reply

Hi, I'm thinking of doing it as I'm expecting to fly a fair amount over the few weeks. For a change I think that I may fly enough to qualify for Plat this year. But I'm considering doing the Plat challenge because

(1) I'll get 75% more bonus miles instead of the 25% I get right now for Gold once I qualify for Plat. Even if I fly enough (say 50000 miles for Plat), if I qualify for Plat earlier, I'd collect an extra 75% x 30000 miles (say).

(2) I think Plat could help with domestic upgrades. While I rarely fly domestically these days on personal expense, I do expect to have a flight coming up, where I think an upgrade would be nice. This is for JFK-LAX. How realistic is this? Quite a while ago, I was Plat, and I don't think I managed to get upgraded either. But this time around I think I'll be flying on a Saturday, so I think that there won't be that many business travelers to compete with me?

How much does the Plat challenge cost? I've read that it's $200. Do you think it's worthwhile paying the $200?

Bear in mind I wasted $150 a few months ago for a more expensive ticket so that I could have enough EQP for Gold, but that's now useless given the new developments. At that time I didn't remember about AA's filing for Chapter 11, but does that affect anything? I guess the consensus is that I shouldn't hoard my miles, but I still do....

Thanks!
