A friend is thinking of buying a ticket on Alitalia to be used 10 months after purchase. Have Alitalia's financial difficulties been resolved? Do you trust they will still be flying 10 month's from now? I thought I read that they had a cash infusion several months ago, but I am not sure of this.

If you are worried, get travel insurance as well.

Or wait awhile before buying and see how things go. 10 months out seems a bit far out and unnecessary.

No. Even though they are most likely to be around, they might not operate your route on the day you plan for. In fact, that's true for all airlines.

Air France/KLM which holds 25% of Alitalia as is currently their code-share partner apparently will NOT participate in the EUR 300 million capital increase which Alitalia desperately needs. Additionally they have decided to write down the value of their existing shareholding in Alitalia to ZERO!

If Alitalia goes bust over the next few months as is looking increasingly likely it is highly likely that ticket holders will not get their money back.

I am unsure whether there is a difference if someone has booked through the Air France or KLM websites. Maybe they would reroute someone via Paris or Amsterdam. But do you want this worry and hassle?

For the time being stay well clear of Alitalia!

Alitalia is trying like hell to get Air France-KLM to buy the rest of it (Air France currently owns 25%), which is something that they didn't want in the past. This could actually turn out to be a good deal for Air France-KLM in the end because when they first tried to take control, the price tags was still a few billion euros. If they buy the company now, it will only cost a few hundred million.
