What goes on in first class when they close those curtains??
Okay folks. There are some of us who have never flown in first class. We are stuck in steerage at the back of the plane and feel like we won the Lotto when we get two bags of peanuts from the flight attendant. I often talk to my seatmates during the journey---primarily because we are wedged in so tight that we are sitting in each other's laps-and that there is little else to do (how many times can you read the gift catalog and look at the self improvement guides or the electric shoe shiner with the red bristles on one side and the black on the other?).<BR><BR>We often discuss exactly what is going on in first class after they close that curtain. It must be something special/risque/wild/excessive for that drape to be closed. If you travel first class tell all of us others what really goes on up there!!!<BR><BR>Do first class passengars put on special head gear and have special handshakes (like the loyal order of the buffalo)? Do the roast a pig over an open flame and then carve it up to eat? Are flight attendants modeling lingerie? Does a craps table descend from the cieling and a high stakes game of dice takes place? Are stock tips handed out like candy by some broker? What is the true story?<BR><BR>Any advice is appreciated.

Mostly we're just glad that our seat # is a single digit. There used to be a great deal of difference between first and economy but no more. I am sorry but what you really get up front is a bit more room and the chance to get off first and you can check in more easily. On overseas flights, you are treated somewhat better but unless you're on one of the Asian airlines, you are just less crowded.

For what it costs to fly first or business, it should be better service, food, etc. although I must say that, in general, I have noticed a decline in some of the amenities and quality of food etc. in the past few years especially with North American airliners. Hope this trend isn't spreading.

I got to fly 1st class once to Newark, because they cancelled my flight and had nowhere else to put me on the next one. So I'll tell you what marvels awaited me.<BR><BR>CLOTH napkins, not paper. Ceramic plates, not plastic. Glass glasses not plastic. A meal instead of pretzels. And the best part? Being asked (on a 2 hr. flight) "will you be joining us for lunch today?"<BR><BR>"No, I'll just wait out on the wing until the rest of you are finished."

This year, I flew to Arizona(Jan) on Alaska and they did not close the curtain. Then I flew to Venazuela(Feb) on American and they did not close the curtain.Then I flew Alaska (may) to Mexico and they did not close the curtain. So they may have lightend up since may. Will be Flying British in December so i guess i will get to see.

Here's the truth...they close the curtains to prevent, or at lease discourage, people in back from cramming the lavatories meant for first class/business class. Also, to prevent the coach folks from seeing that there is better service, better food/wine, etc. And to suggest a level of privacy from crying kids, restless teens, and others who tend to fly coach. It suggests a level of snobbery,but, HEY! that's what people pay more for. For example, first class on BA to London from here is over $9,000 (that was the price in 1998, anyway, last I checked). They have long beds, satin pJ's, round the clock bar and snack shop, and many other niceties. Business is almost as good (don't know the price, but it's high). On some planes they have fitted them with reclining seats that go all the way back, with a foot rest that comes up to match, thus you can almost lie down. Guess the answer is, you get what you pay for.

The best thing is the seats are bigger and there is more room between the seats. That - and the wine is better than in coach (TIP: I have actually convinced the flight attendants in coach to go to 1st class and get me a glass of the better wine - and they generally have not charged me for it!)

Every first class flight i have taken in the last year have had scores of people fom coach using the first class bathroom. The only concession announced by the flight attendents was they were suppose to line up a couple of rows back into coach an not line up in first. The curtains were not closed the entire flight.
