WestJet to add budget line

WestJet, the feisty Number Two airline in Canada, has announced a subsidiary budget line. No name, destinations, or date of operation was included in the Canadian Press report carried by the Huffington Post. The Alberta-based airline was considered “budget” when it took to the skies in 1996 but gradually expanded to compete with Air Canada full-service on domestic and some sunshine routes. The report mentioned that the fleet will be based on the new B-737-800 aircraft, a fuel-efficient version of the narrow-bodied workhorse that in some variants may be capable of crossing the Atlantic. The main WestJet service recently expanded to European routes using wide-bodied 767s. It also has a fledgling short-hop line called WestJet Encore. Regulators and staff unions still have to agree to the newest project so it will be awhile before take-off. Air Canada initiated Air Canada Rouge in 2013, aimed at vacationers with somewhat lower prices. The Rouge schedule, including trans-ocean flights, gets longer each season. For us economy passengers in the back seats, more competition brings the hope of moderate air fares.
