US Air to LGA
Since I retired 5 years ago, I have done very little flying. Need to go from Pensacola to LGA over Thanksgiving and the best fares are on Northwest and US Air. Even when I was flying a lot I had very little experience on either carrier. NW connects in Memphis, so I'm a little concerned about weather. USA goes through Charlotte and that relieves most weather woes. I've just heard so many horror stories about NW and not sure if they are all true. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks!

I've only flown on NW twice, long ago, but I've always been satisfied with USAirways. They've done well by me when they did have to change my itinerary, and all contact with the staff has been pleasent and professional.

Not sure why you think Charlotte is less vulnerable than Memphis in the winter -- would think the differential isn't that great, and T'giving is still early in the year.
I'm not all that fond of US Air but given the choice, I'd probably take it over NW. However, could you possibly drive to another, less marginal airport than Pensacola, and get a non-stop to LGA or one of the other NYC airports? New Orleans, Tallahassee, maybe even Mobile? Or it might be you'd have to connect in Atlanta, but that might be better than either Charlotte or Memphis, although all will be a ZOO for T'giving.
I'm willing to drive as much as 3 hrs. to another airport to save a connection -- the time usually comes out even or better. And no worries about a missed connection. (Only drawback can be higher prices for NOT connecting from a smaller city -- e.g.: it costs me less to fly from RDU and connect in Charlotte to the same nonstop that would cost me more if I just drove to Charlotte and got on the plane. STOOPID!)

Yeah, the RT price from ATL is much larger than from PNS. MSY has some good fares, but it's a nightmare getting throuh NOLA to the airport. We'll probably just go with USA from either PNS or Fort Walton. Thanks for the input!

I'm not a fan of either airline (efficient but chilly service with both), but I'd have to give US Air the edge for newer fleet. Northwest has some old DC-9s (and -10s, if I'm not mistaken) in its fleet; Airbuses are working their way into the system, so you may luck out. In their defense, the older planes are scrupulously maintained; I once flew in an NWA DC-9 (remember, they stopped making them in the early 80s) that they had restored to immaculate shape, so no complaints there. However, their new paint scheme...! Grotesque.
Connecting through Memphis or Charlotte would probably be a wash vis-à-vis weather, I'd think (but I could be wrong). I personally would go with US Air.

Strongly consider Delta-PNS-ATL-LGA.Better chance of connecting in ATL to a widebody aircraft, the food courts/shops on A&B concourse are really nice, and Delta has many more flights than into LGA than NW or US thru their hubs.Have you compared prices via Ft Walton? Delta has 3 jet flights now from there!

Randy,
Yes, we've looked at VPS-LGA on Delta. The prices are still $100 more than NW and USA. Don't know if they will come down or not. Last year we got a great Delta deal out of VPS on Priceline, but this year our schedule is a little tighter. We may just wait a little longer and see if Delta comes down. Thanks!

For the love of God, DON'T TAKE US AIRWAYS!!!
Back in the bad old days when they used to dominate flights between the midwest and the east coast, I took them multiple times in one year between CMH - LGA. They were NEVER on time and the flight attendants acted like they were doing you a tremendous favor by even looking at you, let alone helping you. I was going to go out to dinner at Thanksgiving with my family. I took a US NON-STOP flight, and, you guessed it . . . they lost my luggage. I didn't get it back until after Thanksgiving. I won't even mention the runaway drink cart at takeoff . . .
If that doesn't convince you, let me tell you that US left me stranded in LGA 2 times due to their complete incompetence . . . the first time they paid for a hotel room and a whopping $5 for breakfast (in NYC, mind you) . . . The second time it happened, the surly witch at the ticket counter said, "Oh, it's YOU again. Well, we're not paying for anything, even if the plane was late!" I think US is where all surly airline workers go to live out the remainder of their careers . . .
NW may not be great, but I'd WALK before I EVER took US!!! And no matter what name they're using today, they'll always be "Agony Airlines" to me . . .
