I don't know if anyone has any ideas, but I am about to go beserk trying to get a refund from Delta Airlines or Egypt Air for a flight that was cancelled. The flight was from Pittsburgh to JFK and was cancelled due to mechanical issues. I was to catch a flight at JFK to Cairo on Egypt Air which I did not make until two days later after I drove to JFK.
I called Delta to try and get a refund on the unused cancelled flight and they said that although it says Delta on the reservation, it is controlled by Egypt Air and they have to make the refund. Egypt Air says that Delta or the travel agent I went through has to make the refund. My travel agent says to try and get the refund through my trip insurance. My trip insurance says I need a letter from Delta saying the flight was cancelled. Delta says they can not provide me with that letter, I need to contact Egypt Air. See why I am going beserk?
Anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed from here? I am really disgusted with these airlines, especially Delta. There is a lot more to this story concerning their horrible customer service. I'm so tired of everyone trying to pass the buck. Has anyone else gone through anything like this?

When Delta cancelled the flight didn't they rebook you on a later flight?
You booked through an agent. They took your money and made money providing a service. They should be the one helping you get your money back.
Is OP entitled to a refund?
Most likely. But I am surprised that Egyptair couldn't find another way to get them the OP from PIT to JFK in two days. But who knows what other circumstances there might be...
When Delta cancelled the flight, they said they could not get us on a flight to JFK for at least 2 days and that was not definite. Of course getting to JFK 2 days later at the earliest was unacceptable as we were trying to meet our tour in Egypt, so that is why we drove to JFK. It was so utterly ridiculous, the service Delta provided. They said they could not put us on another airline because the ticket was on Egypt Air stock. We called Egypt Air's customer service and they said they could not do anything over the phone, we had to be at the ticket counter in person between 3-6 pm. Pittsburgh does not have an Egypt Air ticket counter, so we drove to JFK. The whole experience was so totally bizarre and no one wants to take responsibility for the cancelled flight.
I also called Delta last night asking for a letter to give to my travel insurance as proof that the Delta flight was cancelled and they say Egypt Air has to provide that, they can not, which is insane, it was a Delta flight. I am about to go insane myself.
Under the circumstances, could the airline have flown the OP to either LGA or EWR within two days. Then OP would only to have to deal with crosstransfer beteen airports. Seems more logical than driving from Pit to JFK
What happened to the TA? They're not helping you at all?
rkk.....When a traveller purchases insurance to cover their travels, most TA's point said traveller to said insurance company....READ: most.....Sounds like OP was not a regular client, and the TA just didnt want anymore to do with them.Sad, but true.
If I have it straight, you were scheduled to fly from Pittsburg to JFK on Delta, connecting with a flight to Cairo. The flight to JFK was cancelled, so you drove to JFK to make sure you made your flight to Egypt (which you did). Am I right? If I am right, it has been my experience that you run into the problem of "if you don't make the first leg of the flight, they cancel the rest" meets "if you don't get it taken care of at the time it happens, you don't get it taken care of". I would think if anyone could help it would be the TA, but since it's after the fact, I think it's going to be much tougher. I've actually had no problem with Delta getting refunds for flights that were cancelled - but my TA took care of all of it.... Good luck..
BUT - let me add one thing, they got the refund at the time of departure (well, would have departed)- not later....
Debi - No, the OP's situation is different. It has nothing to do with "didn't make first flight..." scenario.
From what I understand, the OP bought a ticket from a TA. The ticket is issued by EgyptAir, with a connection from PIT to JFK on DL. DL here is basically just a subcontractor.
DL cancelled the flight, but EgyptAir has the responsibility to get them to Cairo (or whatever final destination it is) one way or another, with or without insurance.
