Trip Cancellation or use Visa insurance?
Hi,
I am thinking of upgrading my Royal bank Visa to the Gold Preferred Card for its trip cancellation insurance(for an extra $100). Expedia offers similar coverage for 31.50 p.p. and it appears that the Visa is the best (cheapest) way to go for our large family of 6.
There are 12 pages of fine print that I have scanned through but feel I may be missing something...
Has anybody done a comparison of credit card insurance benefits vs. Pirvate insurance companies in the past that could offer me any guidance?

Is Royal Bank and American or Canadian Bank?
If Canadian, can I assume you'll be flying from Canada to someplace?
If you're flying from Canada and purchasing tickets there, I understand that cancellation insurance is offered for all tickets purchased from airlines for a small amount extra!!!
If not Canadian - then read everything re insurance from the CC and from Expedia - I cannot comment further.

Hi, Yes Canadian. It's $31 extra for canc. insurance but times 6 is $180.00.
It's possible that by purchasing a more expensive VISA that the insurance will be FREE when flights are booked with the VISA.
Thanks for the reply!

The $31 seems very high - I'm basing my info on family who lives in Toronto and they've never paid that high insurance for their air tickets, maybe only $10-$15. This might also depend on the cost of ticket being purchased and whether they got them direct from airline versus Expedia-type sites.
From where-to-where are you traveling and what is the cost of each ticket.
Otherwise I can't further comment - you'll have to hear from a Canadian buddy who's familiar with this subject.
